Re: The hard drive failure thread

Oh, I have one of those as well. This was one of the WD HDDs on which cleaning the contacts did *not* work (HDD still clicked the same afterwards.)

So tinning the pads will by no means revive...

Re: Directly replacing NiMh cells with Li-Ion cells - bad idea ?

Well, yes and no (to all that). :D I mean, I would have probably done the same too, up to a point. But if I see someone is doing something stupid, I'd always offer to lend them a hand, even if it's...

Re: The hard drive failure thread

No, that's not how PSUs and power work at all!

For starters... NEVER trust the motherboard voltage sensors - at least for the ones that directly measure the PSU's rails. The only voltage sensor I...

Re: Axle typhoon ax-p400l (400W) PSU Dead

Those are all for the main PS. You need not worry about them now. First, you need to get the 5VSB circuit running. Otherwise nothing else will work in the PSU. The SG6105 PWM chip is supplied power...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

As in, it trips the PSU's short-circuit / overload / overpower protection?
If so, that's probably a shorted MOSFET... and likely a result of bad GPU.
Check GPU V_core and RAM Vdd rails resistance...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Yup, that's modern nVidia for you. I never get any luck reviving those, so I don't even try anymore. Not that ATI is much much better.... but at least with the older stuff (R300 all the way up to...

Re: Gigabyte GA-586DX Retro Goodness

I never got into strategy games. Not my cup of coffee I guess (well, I don't drink coffee to begin with. :D )

I'm surprised how well that game looks on a big modern monitor, though. Many games...

Re: Help identifying a chip

Did you conclude you have a "bad" reading because the MOSFET was showing low resistance from Drain to Source? Or Drain to ground? If so, that is actually normal for certain video card MOSFETs. Reason...

Re: Replacing faulty RAM on video cards?

The days of 3.3V-powered RAM are long gone. Also, cards that use DDR RAM typically feed it 2.5-2.6V. So there should be a voltage regulator on the board.

Speaking of which...
U3 and U4 are the...

Re: Directly replacing NiMh cells with Li-Ion cells - bad idea ?

Man, this thread is too funny! :D
Glad you're sharing this story ("repair"?) with us, Danny. :)

LOL. Probably because it makes too much sense. :D

A fairly easy alternative method would have...

Re: Need Catalyst 15.6 for Win 7 x86-64

I usually use FileHippo to find older versions of ATI and nVidia drivers.

But this time, I wasn't able to find exactly what you were looking for (ATI Cat. 15.6). Strange. Normally they keep many...

Re: Replacing faulty RAM on video cards?

Because in 99.9% cases, any kind of graphical anomalies are a result of GPU chip failure and not the RAM. The RAM actually rarely fails. And if it was the RAM, sometimes you can verify that by...

Re: Help identifying a chip

Afraid I can't help with finding what that chip is (my research for these things is not so good).

That aside, if this chip is for an ATI Radeon HD, R7/9, or RX graphics card with shorted...

Re: Delta DPS-360FB A from Dell Studio XPS 435MT

Agreed.

That said, if you already replaced the Chemicon caps, you can still keep them as a spare in case you need to fix/recap something else (some 12V 1-3 Amp power adapters often use caps of...

Re: Axle typhoon ax-p400l (400W) PSU Dead

Replace small electrolytic cap next to DM311 chip.
Check 5VSB rail output for short-circuit to ground (there may be a load resistor, so do not be alarmed if you see a low reading, but instead try to...

Re: please help identify burnt resistor, repairing EMACS PSU

If you have bad caps, chances are the 5VSB wasn't regulating properly and that's one possibility why that resistor burned up. So first order of business, get all bad caps replaced. Then try to...

Re: Infinity PS-12 Powered Subwoofer Fired Amplifier

I don't see any burning at all. If you are referring to the brown stuff around the big caps - that's just glue used to hold down the caps at the factory.

Should be fixable if there are no other...

Re: MSI 848P Neo-V recapping - suggestions and options?

Good to see another classic motherboard saved from the e-dump. Let us know how it all goes. :)

Otherwise, I don't really have much else to add to what ChaosLegionnaire wrote here. Panasonic...

Re: MSI 694T caps replacement

+1
Teapo caps should never be trusted. Generally, they do like to bulge when they go bad, but that's not always the case. Given the age of the motherboard, they are quite overdue for replacement....

Re: PNY Geforce Ti4200

Awesome work, BigT! ;)
Old video cards like these are getting more rare. Nice to see another one get saved.

I imagine this is for some retro/older gaming setup? The Ti4200 is still pretty decent...

Will work only if there is no restriction on height where those caps are located. Also, the caps you linked to are through-hole, whereas the originals are SMD. I myself prefer (and...

Re: GTX 670 Schematic

It's very unlikely you will ever find a schematic diagram for any video card. They are considered disposable/replaceable components by their manufacturers, so I don't think schematic diagrams have...

Re: IPIBL-LB loses BIOS settings after power off

That is quite strange, indeed.
My IPIBL-LB is in a HP PC, so it doesn't have a reset switch. But wonder if will do the same thing. If not, then for sure something may not be quite right with yours....

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Even before that, it is still very likely the memory controller area in the GPU core failed shorted and killed the FETs. That's just how some Radeon cards go. Seen it on the Xbox 360 GPUs as well.
