Re: Turn 100v X-box 360 adapter into 250v

Then the question is how do you know when the solder melted? That weird forked wire tool that comes with cheap chinese hot air guns becomes ineffective with glue, and tweezers have the possibility...

Re: Step-Down Buck Charging Board XL4015 ADJ Lithium Battery Charger Converter Module

1 Chinese amp is equal to 0.5 American amperes.

It was a sarcastic joke.

Re: Step-Down Buck Charging Board XL4015 ADJ Lithium Battery Charger Converter Module

Marginal IMHO, though probably will get there...pretty close. It will get quite hot but should just about do it...

Re: Turn 100v X-box 360 adapter into 250v

Makes rework that much harder... :(

Any good suggestions on how to deal with it, apparently mechanical force is one way though that has a risk of damaging the PCB...

Re: Destroying or not destroying analog meter movements

Oh... close call... I put up my experiment up again and the meter was zero... No current was flowing at all.

Or at least that's what it seems like. Of course if the movement coil broke, it...

Re: Destroying or not destroying analog meter movements

Sensitivity usually means fragility, or at least it seems to imply it.

Let's ignore the dissipation by the shunt resistors as it's always going to be a multiple of the dissipation by the meter...

Re: Destroying or not destroying analog meter movements

Right, a 20KΩ/V passive multimeter mathematically requires a 50A fullscale movement. But this isn't relevant in the current scales at least in this instance because it's relative here.

Suppose...

Re: Turn 100v X-box 360 adapter into 250v

I had to hack a Xbox PSU for a bit higher voltage (13.8V instead of 12V, instead of upping the input voltage), was kind of annoyed at it because apparently they glued the SMT devices to the board...

Re: Does flux expire ?? Flux discussion.

I would guess the animal fat based fluxes could expire when they go rancid (but even then...). Now how about fully hydrogenated shortening instead...?

Re: Turn 100v X-box 360 adapter into 250v

Cool. another piece of electronics that would have been tossed in the trash salvaged for reuse!

Re: Destroying or not destroying analog meter movements

While that is true, if 10mA is FS and I pass 100mA, it's still 10x the amount of current through the meter if everything is linear (and it should be!)

(For VTVMs/FETVMs this is different of course...

Re: Destroying or not destroying analog meter movements

I would have thought the hairline meter winding would be the weakest link before mechanical. Strange. Well, the multimeter I have is so old that it does not have the protection clamp diodes - the...

Destroying or not destroying analog meter movements

Just wondering - I'm sure some here have destroyed analog meters in the past. I'm curious as to how much overcurrent is needed to destroy these things.

I accidentally left my 20KΩ/V analog meter...

Re: Cable Modem Repair - Why Do They Fail?

I have a feeling a lot of these cable modems are just poor QC when designing the chips and they go bad. Only repair is replacement of the BGAs. However without proprietary knowledge of how to test...

Re: Turn 100v X-box 360 adapter into 250v

Screw it, or rather don't screw in a bulb, just plug it straight in and let it fry so we know if it worked or not :D

We're talking incandescent bulbs here. CFLs have their own problems.

Re: Turn 100v X-box 360 adapter into 250v

Well how many hours are the EU bulbs rated for, then? The US bulbs are 1000 hour, which is supposedly only 1 year (365 days * 3 hours per day)

Anyway you may parallel multiple bulbs or use a...

Re: Turn 100v X-box 360 adapter into 250v

[offtopic]

I'm surprised that halogen is guaranteed for 2 years. There's a similar law in the USA that prohibits sale of general purpose incandescent (once again, specialty are okay, but even...

Re: Evga 600w first repairing a PSU

it sounds like your 5VSB is working (purple wire is getting 5V). Unfortunately this is where it gets frustrating to debug .. capacitors bad, shorted semiconductors, something is telling the output...

Re: Turn 100v X-box 360 adapter into 250v

Usually size will tell you if the wattage is enough, though I don't have a direct mapping of what size is what watts. However just be mindful, if all I had were through hole, that's what I'd do too,...

Re: Capacitor replacement

^ yes

Thing is, old computers that have these really huge old low ESR caps typically have the charging side with... 120Hz rectified mains, oddly enough. Switching PSUs were rare and in order to...

Re: Turn 100v X-box 360 adapter into 250v

BTW you may want to insulate the resistors some more if you want to be really safe. I suspect the pads were for surface mount and not have wires jut out close to the other rail. Air resistance gap...

Re: Turn 100v X-box 360 adapter into 250v

Yeah DBT would be good.

Well, assuming the device was working, yeah it looks okay. Just make sure that yellow capacitor is rated for at least 275V, if it's only rated for at least 250V it may be...

Re: Signal detect and switch

I still don't get it. So you have three identically labeled output connectors and you have an LED that you want to light no matter how you connect three wires to those connectors? Seems very odd.
