Re: BSOD and Gigabyte Capacitors

Understandable, it isn't exactly straight forward, I only know about it because we ran into issues at work back in 2015 (last time a 53 week ISO year occurred) with some reports that pulled data from...

Re: BSOD and Gigabyte Capacitors

Assuming they are using the ISO 8601 date standard there can potentially be 53 weeks in an ISO year depending on what day the year starts on (2004 is one of these years).

Re: Recommendations: Portable laptop/tablet for texas hot auto shop environment

If you need somewhat rugged an older Dell Precision (as TopCat suggested) or Latitude (the higher end ones with the magnesium bodies) or Lenovo T/R series Thinkpad (T430/530 and older) will do and...

Re: Your Best Dumpster Finds

A special note on that system, since you appear to have the G33M02 variant of the motherboard it only supports dual-core CPUs (the less common G33M03 supported quad-cores as well), but it does...

Re: Bestec "12Z" returns for polycaps

Those are some ugly spikes. Too bad you don't have a before, but I would suspect it is substantially worse with the polys.

Here are some comparisons, I used the same 50mV and 2uSec scales noted on...

Re: Average lifetime of your discrete video cards?

X2, I've had a couple of the infamous GeForce 8x00 series failures, and a few AGP cards fail (I think a Radeon 9700 and a GeForce 5600 Ultra but it's been awhile). Otherwise I haven't had any...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Which is somewhat ironic, because DHL is absolutely terrible in the US (very slow, and often more expensive than UPS/FedEx/USPS).

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Oh I'm definitely not complaining especially for the price (the seller thought it was "broken", but apparently they didn't realize that you needed to push in one of the speaker buttons to get sound...

Re: Corsair 400W PSU w/one bad cap

Yep, looks like the caps (at least what can be seen in the pics.) are OSTs (mediocre brand at best) as well, if you don't replace them all now chances are they will fail in the near future (since all...

Re: Tempered Glass Computer cases... sexy or sh*t?

^This, they look good when new but are a giant pain to keep clean and will show every smudge and spec of dust. Of course there are the potential EMI issues stj mentioned, and since it is tempered...

Re: New caps on motherboard hot

New LGA775 boards are a bit hard to come by these days (granted it isn't too difficult to find used higher-end ones with polymer caps on eBay fairly cheap, but even a "good" 7+ year old used...

Re: Help I need a new computer.

The memory and expansion slots should be standard (not sure how "picky" the board may be with memory, but the slots themselves are standard). The PSU and Motherboard are both proprietary as is the...

Re: Help I need a new computer.

Age wise they are pretty similar (3rd. gen Core-Ix), but one big advantage of the Dell is that the OptiPlex 7010 series still took standard ATX (24 Pin + 4Pin) PSUs (at least in the mini-towers, I...

Re: Power supply build quality pictorial. part 2

Yep, not exactly an original design either, the PC Power & Cooling Turbo-Cool 1200W (and the 1KW model that preceded it) used two 600W PSUs, though in the PCP&C each PSU is on its own separate...

Re: New caps on motherboard hot

Unfortunately good motherboard grade electrolytic caps are becoming very hard to come by (since most newer boards are using polymers there isn't much demand anymore).

It looks like DigiKey still...

Re: New caps on motherboard hot

The FMs have higher ESR than the MCZs you replaced (18 mOhm vs. 12 mOhm) which would cause them to run hotter. I also imagine the original MCZs were running fairly hot to begin with to fail (Rubycon...

Re: Android Oscilloscopes , Cheap and good enough to test PSU ?

I see the OP doesn't list a location, if you're in the US <$50 analogue scopes are pretty easy to come by (especially brands other than Tektronix and HP, you'll often need to add you're...

Re: the gutless, bloated, and fried power supply hall of shame

Yah I guess acceptable for what it is (a piece of crap) but still definitely not all that good overall (I realize it isn't completely "fair" to test a partially re-capped PSU either since there may...
