Re: win10 - potential warning.
I don't wish to be seen as some legalistic pedant (I hate the legal system), but I follow the copyright convention which allows for quoting sections of copyrighted works for discussion purposes, etc. In my case I quote just enough of an article to make a point, and I always endeavour to provide an attributing link or reference.
That said, I have no qualms about uploading service manuals. I believe that manufacturers have a moral obligation to assist their customers in repairing their broken products rather than profiting from them. In...Last edited by fzabkar; 08-09-2016, 04:30 PM.

Re: win10 - potential warning.
It's not appropriate to quote someone else's work in its entirety, especially when it can cause problems for others.
Instead I use Google's cached text version wherever possible:

The calculator chip's LED digit select outputs also double as the scan outputs for the keyboard. Could two of these signals be shorted to each other???...

FWIW, the Novus 823 user manual also calls for two presses of the "C" key.

Re: "Weird Device" : a Calculator
The MM5736 datasheet states that "two depressions [of the "C" key] are required at power on to clear the machine".
I don't know why, but each calculation example begins with a "C" to clear the display register.

Re: Maxtor Diamond Max 21 ?
Examine the SMART report with a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo. Look for reallocated, pending, or uncorrectable sectors.

Re: Hard drive recovery
Well, it looks like we're not going to find out which 2TB drive doesn't need a chip swap.
FYI, here is a demo by a DR shop which shows why a straight PCB swap for a WD drive probably won't work:

Here is a thread which explains why straight PCB swap for a Toshiba drive won't work:

Re: Buying electronic components on AliExpress
The PRC is corrupt from top to bottom. There may be an honest seller among them, but how can you tell?
My rule of thumb is that if something is worth counterfeiting, then the Chinese will have done it. For this reason I no longer buy from places like WES Components (a popular supplier to the trade in Australia). I've been stung by faulty cables, expired batteries, misrepresented products, and fake transistors. I prefer to get my stuff from RS Components, Farnell, Digikey, or Mouser. They cost a lot more, but at least...

Re: Hard drive recovery
Please tell us the model number. If it's a Samsung, then there is a chance that your donor firmware matches the patient. Samsungs don't store "adaptive" data in ROM whereas most other manufacturers do.
For example, no Seagate drive since 7200.11 (F3 firmware architecture) can be recovered with a board swap, unless the ROM is transferred. In fact a damaged ROM usually renders the drive unrecoverable. Toshibas and Hitachis also require ROM or NVRAM transfer, while WDs require that U12 be transferred, although you can get lucky...Last edited by fzabkar; 07-24-2016, 01:48 PM.

Re: Hard drive recovery
I have no love for the data recovery profession, but there are a LOT of cheaper alternatives than Kroll Ontrack (visit the HDD Guru forum).
What should really make you angry, though, is the fact that you would simply be removing a shorted 5V TVS diode, with subsequent full access to your data, if your drive were anything other than a WD. WD's stupid engineers don't understand the concept of a fuse -- a fuse should go in SERIES with the supply, NOT in PARALLEL. That's why you are facing a bill of $1K - $2K instead of a simple, zero-cost, 2-minute,...

Re: Hard drive recovery
These "modular" PSUs have cables with non-standard pinouts. When people switch cables between different PSUs, they will often end up with +12V on the +5V pins. This is what appears to have happened to the OP....

Re: Hard drive recovery
If the 5V TVS diode is damaged (check D3 and R67), then there is a high probably that the preamp on the headstack has been damaged.

Re: 12V rail is not on ?
The forward voltage drops in the datasheets are those associated with the diode's rated current. Your multimeter probably outputs only 1mA on the diode range and even less on the resistance ranges. You should be using the higher resistance ranges to confirm whether a short exists.
See the attached I-V characteristics and notice the forward voltage at 0.01 A (= 10mA). Your meter readings should be less than this....

Re: Water Damaged Diseqc Sat Switch
@DJ_MIX, if you could upload a detailed photo of the reverse side of the PCB, perhaps I could trace the circuit for you. I'm also using your thread as a learning exercise. :-)

Re: 12V rail is not on ?
Don't switch the PSU on after removing components. Just test them for shorts without powering on.

Re: 12V rail is not on ?
CapLeaker has already identified the components that are likely culprits.
In any case you appear to have already found the problem -- shorted D8. After removing D8, test for shorts across the 12V output again. Also confirm that D8 tests shorted out-of-circuit. There should be an electrolytic capacitor filtering the 12V output. Test it also.
Edit:
Here is the circuit diagram for an LC-B250ATX.
