    HDD test apps.

I'm looking for a program that I can use to test some HDDs to see if they're good or bad? like in terms of sectors etc.

What are some good free ones?

    Thanks.

the best are tailored to the drive hardware - what drives are they?

WD and Seagate for example both have bootable cd images with test-programs on them.

Run Active KillDisk on them first. [Free version is good enough.]

The firmware on Formatted drives will map around bad sectors and sometimes they [the remapped bad sectors] won't show up at all.

use the manufacturers tools, some of them also check the electronics as well a the surface of the disk.
in the case of WD some can even set & clear options on the drive relating to noise-vs-performance.

One thing to note about the seatools by seagate. it will test pretty much add drives, no matter the brand, but the temp sensor part i do not think works right. I once tried it on a brand new drive. just got it in and factory sealed. put it in, did a quick test using seatools, gave me an over heated error. It was not a seagate drive, but still, the drive was brand new.. there should be no way that it had been overheated as i was its first owner (besides the store that sold it that is). Just a fair warning, if you do get that error, then it may not be overheated even though it says it is..

Seconded on the temp sensor part.

I was once testing a batch of drives with Seatools and a few of the thin Maxtors popped up with something bizarre like 160˚C, a guy in the room shouted DON'T TOUCH THEM!!! I then pointed out that the workbench should have been melting.... it was perfectly cool.

If you want a rough guesstimate of something while you're working remotely on a PC or don't want to reboot, Speedfan is a good one. It'll take the raw SMART data and convert it into an easy to read list with description of bad values.
If a drive is flagged as bad by Speedfan SMART analysis, it's *usually* correct.

                          +1 for speedfan

ubuntu also gives a good readout of SMART data and drive temp via the stock disk utility. no install required, you can use it form the live cd if you wish. also good for r/w rates, etc.

I've had seatools incorrectly report the temperature as well, but I usually discount that when deciding whether to replace it or not. If there is nothing wrong with the drive, it will still pass seatools tests, even if it thinks it's too hot.

Seriously, it works with all drives, runs right from windows, tests the surface of the disk, reports smart data and a whole bunch of other stuff.

it's possible that seatools is just translating because seagate drives contain bullshit smart data.

i'v got reams of smart-logs on my pc about pending this, and head error that - total bullshit.
i get the same from every damned seagate drive i test from several ranges.

i suspect that seagate has "twisted" the smart data somehow so only there own tools can interpret it.

I like HDTune in Windows, because it allows me to eliminate the controller on the motherboard as the issue. I hook the drive up to my PC, boot up, and run all of my diagnostics in Windows so that I can also be doing other things at the same time. Saves me having to have a PC just for testing hard drives. I do also use SeaTools on occasion.

As for Ghost, they still have a DOS version, you just have to have the Corporate product, not the home product. I use it at work almost daily.

                                          Hello
I have power adaptor(220V/input, 12V 1.2A/output) which has symptom of fluctuating output DC voltage between 11.5V-12.2V.
So I opened its plastic case and when switched it on, I heard constant tik tik sound from inside its PCB.
I measured DC voltage between negative and positive pin of the largest capacitor(400v 10uf) and it was measured contant 300V.
I also measured ESR value of all capacitors and I noticed that one of capacitor(KMG 16v 470uf), which located in the secondary side, have high ESR value(10 ohm),So I replaced it with same specification NXH capacitor....

test active pfc power with lamp test

                                          Hello
I have a big problem and that is that in some cases when repairing active pfc power supplies I cannot work with a test lamp. I can only get help with 5 volts standby and for starting and starting I have to work without a lamp and this way there is a possibility of parts exploding and other parts being added.
Sometimes with a multimeter test the problems can be reduced to some extent, but I had several cases that had to be tested on and online and recently two varistors exploded. They had terrible resistance because the power supplies were over 800 watts.
                                          Is there a way...

Samsung UN60EH6000F Black Screen, Backlight and Sound Good. Power Cycle Returns Picture

I have a 60 inch Samsung UN60EH6000F flatscreen TV. The screen went black a few months ago Sound is good, backlight is good, no menu. I replaced the TCon board with a used board purchased from Ebay. It worked fine for a 3-4 months, then the screen started ‘fading' back. Once again, sound is good, backlight is good, no menu. However, this time the picture looks fine for about 10-15 minutes, then fades back. If I power cycle the TV, the display reappears, for another 10-15 minutes, then fades black again. Repeatable ever time.

I ordered a supposedly ‘new' Tcon board this time, and
