    Re: Whats wrong here?

You have to charge for your time, or the freebie clients will dog you to death.
Been there, done that. It never ends.

I listen to the problem, and determine if something I did wrong.
(Your PSU with craps was your fault, own it.)

If she is getting popups, etc, etc, that is her problem.
Ask her if she wants to "engage you to make repairs".
Even the most stupid fuck generally understands "I have to pay for this."

Always offer an alternative, such as taking it to Geek Squad (USA), or calling their ISP for free help with internet problems.

Well yeah, I agree PSU with crap caps was my fault so I exchanged her a new system with a good PSU altogether free of charge. But yeah, pop-ups are her problem so now when I see her number on my phone I just ignore it.
I did tell her to go to a computer store to fix her issues but she said they're all crooks and didn't want to go to one... O.o

Tell her that people that don't want to pay for a service they receive are crooks too.

Or charge her $200 to fix her problem, whether you want her to class you as a crook could be a good or bad thing. She may be a high standing member of the community...

                  Re: Whats wrong here?

OMFG this woman is driving me insane!... even though I sold her the PC like 2 months ago...

Recently, for the past 3 days she keeps ringing me.

Anyway... first time she called and she said: "I reformatted the computer myself and theres no sound, the screen looks funny and the computer doesn't connect to the net". I then said she didn't install the drivers yet and she needed to go find another PC with internet, download the drivers etc. and I then gave her a number for a computer guy I know.

Later that afternoon she calls again... she said she doesn't like the guy I introduced because he wanted to charge $150 and whatever for repairs and that it was all bullshit. Again, she asks me why she can't install these drivers after she downloads them to a CD from the library etc.
I said I didn't know and that I've left the computer industry already (slightly true since I'm gonna be doing school education at uni next term). She then says: "What?! you want me to throw my computer out or something?" I said "No, I don't want YOU to do that, but look here's a number you can call for help" (another friend who does tech support in IT). She said: "Can you get him to call me please?"... seeing as I wanted her off my tail (I had a party to attend), I gave my friend a call and told him to ring her since he's looking for work... and so he does.

Later that night my friend said he managed to fix everything over the phone and everything was running great. I was relieved... or so I thought...

This morning she calls again at 8AM. I'm stone cold in bed after a big night out partying late with my friends. Thankfully my dad answers the phone and says I'm asleep. He told me she wanted help with WinRAR or something and wanted me to call her back. I didn't call back so from what I figured she called my friend instead.

My friend then drags his ass to her place on a 40KM trek or so by train and bus. He then rings me when I'm at the car mechanics and vents his anger on the phone "This woman is screaming at me cause I'm a bit late (he was on his way there) and she keeps complaining I'm too expensive etc..."
Later he fixed everything up at her place then willingly charged her $200 for 8 hours of work. ($200 is his fixed price for 8 hours)
She says she doesn't have any money cause she's a pensioner and says she'll do a bank transfer the week after...

I think he's fallen for something... but then again it's not my problem anymore.

                  Thanks.

I'd make a special trip to her place late at night and put a rotten dead animal in her snail mail box!

There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.

                      Re: Whats wrong here?

A few comments and suggestions having lived in IT world to all the posts expressed so far.

                      1) I just read that Linksys has a 25% return on its products because the products are too hard to install/setup for the average user even with all "friendly" software installs, videos, help, forums, and tech support. So here is a product that is from one vendor (hardware and software) with a limited number of configuration options and 1/4 of the people can't figure out how to use it.

So I can understand why some demographics of the population have a hard time understanding computers (with multiple hardware and software vendors all trying to work together) and how to use them. This doesn't take into consideration all spyware, viruses, etc that they have to contend and deal with.

                      2) A non windows systems is not easily the answer. Any variation of linux or Apple also has its challenges for the end user. Does the printer have a linux driver? Does itunes work in Linux? (I don't need the answer to these, just throwing out possible issues with alternative OS).

                      3) If giving away a PC to a family or friend (good intentions), setup an account for them that has *limited* privileges. I had to reformat and reinstall windows 3 times for a in-law until I figured out that if I setup a guest account I would limit the damage done. Ever since this, I had have no issues in the last 3 years. Before the guest account, I would reformat/reinstall every 3 to 4 months.

                      4) For certain demographics, there are *free* computer classes taught at your local library or community schools, etc. Send them the agenda.

                      5) When you need expertise in an area where you have none, it always seems expensive. The local car dealerships charge $115/hour. Getting an appliance repair person just to make a house call is easily $80 to $100 + time + materials.

lol. I don't really care if she calls to be honest... if I do pick up... I simply give her stoned replies and "I dunno's".

So basically I'm ignoring her lol. But my friend on the other hand gets abused through the line... but he'll deal with that bit cause it isn't my problem.

Stj I don't even have a dambed printer on my system, and never will. If I need something printed I just email it to my wife and she takes care of it. I just tossed 10 or so printers out of my back porch. People aways give me these things with mostly the same old story. You know the one..."Oh it works great but I got a new because the old one sometimes did this or that." Or its "Oh it works great but I ran out of ink five years ago." Or its "Oh it worked great until my kid poured milk in it." Having a little junk printer on the system ends up being a costly thing to have. My DVD burning may also cost a little but at least I end up with a stuffed rack of movies to watch in the end.

well i own a laser - it just works.

unfortunatly everybody i know ownz an inkjet.

they just work - so long as you dont stop using them for more than a couple of weeks - then the ink dry's in the head!

clever that, selling someone an injet is like giving them a crackpipe - once they start they are hooked!!!!
