    Windows Live Messenger issues.

I have a problem with my messenger program, Windows Live Messenger. I just reinstalled Windows XP on this PC today so I know I haven't got a corrupted registry or anything similar. When I installed Windows Live Messenger, everything works well, except I can't talk to anyone and vice versa.... not a very good start to a messaging service if you can't talk to anyone.
When I sttempt to start a conversation, Windows Live Messenger freezes and says it isn't responding. At first I thought my hard drive was fragmented after installing drivers and office applications etc. So I used Diskeeper Home edition that was bundled with my Intel DP965LT motherboard to defragment the hard drive (which was actually fragmented by a mere 23% or so), but it didn't solve anything as my messenger still freezes.
It took me about an hour or so to download and install Windows Live messenger so I don't think it has corrupted files. I think maybe something else, like the ads at the bottom of the program are freezing it? but I'm not sure so I think someone here might have a better answer for me so I can get around this issue.

I know it's not the Microsoft servers that have the issue because Windows Live Messenger works on my laptop without an issue, so it;s definitely my PC.

Here everything is normal and looks like there isn't an issue in sight. (oh and by the way, I have a new version of messenger)

    Then....

As you can see, I've tried to start a conversation here and it freezes and doesn't even want to work at all.

    Thanks.

Check the Event Log for errors when you installed messenger
They really made it a crapfest in version 2009

Here is a page with direct access to the MSI files; http://messengergeek.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!E3785B1281BBDA1!1271.entry

It sounds to me like a reinstall of the "Windows Live Communications Platform" might be in order

I forgot to update this, but everything seems to work now. The fix was just patience. I decided to wait for about 5-10 mintues and it just fixed itself and it worked properly, and has been till now.

      Thanks.

The "freezes" is advertising space downloading, ESPECIALLY if your system is weak on specs (low ram, slow hard drive, weak CPU.) I get this often every time I start up MSN and I multitask often so it jarred me at the start then after that all ok.

Ditto to updates if yours is set to automatic and set to install automatically instead of waiting to be asked for install, for windows not just MSN.

There are hackwares that let you fix the MSN to purge the advertsings action.

            >why oh why?
            why MSN?

because everybody else is using it...

i would just tell them to use gmail's chat..or something else that doesn't require installing a fuckin' program just to chat...

There are much better MSN clients
I use Miranda IM (which supports a myraid of other protocols, like ICQ, AIM, Yahoo, IRC etc etc etc)

If you only want MSN tho I can recommend aMSN, it's a very nice client, which can do Webcam with other users that use the M$ client, something most other clients can't

For linux comparable to Miranda IM in functionality there is Pidgin (previously Gaim)

A-Patch can remove advertising etc in the M$ MSN client, you know what they say about polishing a turd tho...

And here is some info on how to run the turd on XP x64 (yeye, call me a man whore, so what? )

                Re: Windows Live Messenger issues.

I remove this silly crap as soon as I install the system.
Messenger, MSN, and its ilk are all marketing tools and expose your system to compromise.

One nice thing about servicing business clients is they don't require all the youth or multimedia toys.

OP, I encourage you to find an imaging solution such as Ghost or DD, etc, and learn to use it. The more Windows B.S. you load onto your system, the more unstable it will become.

Build and image your system in stages.
Keep these images so you can revert to a known-clean system when you get a FOOBAR like the above. Defender, Silverlight, Live, Messenger, MSN, AIR, are all merde in my opinon. You get what you get, when you install this junk.
