Router went funny after surge. Assuming the worst.

Well while I was away this summer it appears that our house fell victim to a surge and a power outage.
We lost a printer and more importantly, our WRT54G started acting up.
Pretty much the wired and wireless connections still work (you can see other systems and move still move stuff around the network) but the WAN port that the modem plugs into is acting up. It knows when the modem is connected but aside from one or two blips it will not communicate with the modem so now I am forced to used the cheesy integrated router/hub in the modem but I can't use it forever as Telus loaded it's custom interface into it (and the firmware from Siemens will not work) and aside from configuring the wi-fi, you can't do anything else (not even turn the firewall off or open ports) and that pretty much means goodbye remote login.

Anyways, I am wondering if reflashing the WRT54G with a newer firmware (as we have never updated the firmware in the thing) might cure the problem (assuming that it's because of a corrupt firmware loaded in the thing)
It's either that or go get a WAP54G and hook it up once I manage to get my Baystack gear.

Open it: I suspect something reated to the WAN connector (caps, coils, fuses) broke due to excessive stress.
Anyway are you sure only a power outrage happened? These damages may be connected to phone surges and spikes (such as a lightning hitting the nearest phone tower) as well.

I opened the thing and saw no visual damage.
Well it happened at the same time my dads printer decided to go tits up and we did get a surge just before that.

You'll have to manually test the electronic components inside your router, since many components fail without showing any visual damage.

Also, I would suggest you get a new router. The WRT54G is a pretty shitty router, my cousin has one and it loses its connection with his Internet connection everyday (he says he has to unplug the power and plug it back in).

Well, with the adequate firmware, a wrt54g is fore sure one of the best SOHO router available.
Nothing from Negear or D-link crap can stand it. Sure, the caps can fuck it up, but i think those disconnects are either from a wrong configuration / installation or simply a bad DSL / Cable modem or line.

Regarding the death WAN port, i think it is obviously, that this is a over voltage damage, which is probably hard to fix. I would test / replace the foil capacitors and the DSL transformer and may be the dsl coils if there is one (all at the WAN port AREA before the DSL transformer).
If it gets to the silicon parts, i would not bother to fix it.

Why does my ISP router hate my "homemade" power supply??
              by double_DD
              Hi all,

It's gonna be a long intro, so please buckle in, as it's a problem that's been bugging me for several days now. Thanks in advance.

So, I have 2 modems/routers, whatever the proper nomenclature is, one from ISP and one mine. I want to power them via USB-C rather then their original mains adapters (for reasons, that are hard to explain to sane people). Both routers come with 12V/3A mains adapters.
For this purpose I acquired USB-C charger with 250W and 5 ports, 2 of which can supply max 20V/3A. Since 12V isn't a standard PD voltage option (and to future proof,...

UPNP, "Standards" and hardware that implements it
              by EasyGoing1
I've been writing a program in Java that is really just a robust front end for the use of GitHiub Gists, providing a nice interface for developers to organize, maintain and access code snippets that we tend to need from time to time in our different projects.

One of the features of the program is the ability for people to share their Gists with others who use the program over a LAN or over the Internet. The program just basically serializes a Java class and encrypts it then wraps it into a UDP datastream and sends it over to another user.

So I decided to implement UPNP...

Xiaomi router freezes at boot after re-capping
              by hinisa
I'm using Xiaomi Router 4A gigabit edition as wireless repeater. It worked fine for 2 years or so, but last week, wireless started to disappear.

When I unplug/replug the power, it was working fine for a day/half a day or so until it freezes again.

After testing with different power supply adapters and concluding it wasn't the issue I finally opened the case and this was the situation:

Anyway I proceed to clean up the mess and replace all caps but unfortunately it made the situation worse. Now router can't even boot, either it freezes during...

              Treadmill hit with power surge
              by xTomtom
              Hi everyone,

Recently I acquired a treadmill that was hit by a power surge (I assume). On the control board, there was a varistor that was blown apart and two traces that were partially blown out. I replaced the varistor (to my knowledge it is a matching one) and wired back where the traces were with some 22 awg solid copper wire. When I went to power it on, still nothing. On a quick inspection with my meter, I was getting incoming voltage on the AC in terminal.

The board is a MC2100LS-30 treadmill controller.

Visibly, there are no other problems....
