    Bad RAM?

    Okay,I need some help here.

Recently bought a new 754 motherboard for cheap. It's a ASUS K8N (the simple version, not the Deluxe one - I'd really wish to find a Deluxe one though!) and came with a Sempron 2500+ that I took out and replaced with a Athlon 64 3000+. Anyways, things were nice and neat, replaced the chipset heatsink with a big silver one from a ASRock (though I'm thinking of replacing it with a Titan GPU cooler - that one has active cooling!) and I got it to POST. However, here's where things start to come down. Yes,it will past POST fine, but when Vista SP2 boots,it will just BSOD and restart constantly. I tried tweaking the RAM settings - 5-6-5-1T,2.6V since it's a Kingston KVR stick. I tried two sticks of 128MB (a noname "AM1" one and a red Kingmax stick) and they successfully booted to the desktop without problems.

So,what can I try? I really want to use this KVR stick as it's the only 1GB DDR400 stick I have (I really feel bad for losing a 2GB DDR400 KVR stick already).

Here are the specs,if it helps:

    Delux ATX-450W P4 PSU*
    ASUS K8N Rev 1.01**
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Skt754
    1GB Kingston KVR400X64C3A/1G DDR400 2.6V RAM
    GeCube R9550GU2 Rev1.0 Radeon 9550/9600 256MB AGP8x GPU
    Hitachi HTS541680J9SA00 80GB 5400RPM 2.5" SATA
    Windows Vista Ultimate SP2
no DVD-ROM,everything ODD related is off a USB pendrive

*PSU was formerly a Sun Pro that eventually fried itself, and now it reborn as a recapped KME PSU. It initially had a Sunon fan after the rebuild but I replaced it due to being UNBEARABLY NOISY!!!
**motheboard is filled with 820uF Pannies everywhere except VRM low which are 1500uF,and VRM high which were 1000uF 16v KZGs - the latter (KZG),in number of three, were replaced with '06 datecode HMs (so after the plagued years)

If you suspect bad DRAM, run memtest86 (free to use and download)

      http://www.memtest86.com/download.htm

Let it run for a few hours and see if it passes.

        Re: Bad RAM?

Is this a new install of vista or one that was already on the hard drive? If you replaced the motherboard and are having problems, I would do a clean install of vista so it installs the correct drivers etc.

Test each stick of memory individually with memtest. If they pass then check the hard drive for bad sectors, then reinstall the OS.

Stick passed fine, and HDD barely used.

            It's a clean install.

retiredcaps - did that after I plugged in a ODD. Booted memtest86 from a LastXP DVD (never know when it comes handy ) and left it for 3-4 hours. Tests passed fine.

stj - Couldn't be a Vista problem because:

            1.It's a clean install
2.Vista WILL boot if I replace the 1GB stick with 2 128MB DDR333 sticks. BTW,the 1GB stick will boot into Ubuntu but will freeze when I try to install it alongside Windows Vista. (after the settings, name etc. setup)

What is the ram support of the board and bios version? That is pre 939 if i remember so may not like that pc3200. I know socket A could be finicky.

sorry, but if ubuntu works and vista does not - it looks like a vista problem.
                  try another version of windows.

vista may have bad drivers for ram mapping.

                    Re: Bad RAM?

                    1. Install the 1gb stick and set the ram speed to DDR333 in the bios.
                    2. See if vista will boot with that configuration.

If vista loads in that scenario you could conclude its a hardware configuration/limitation causing the problem. One thing to try if it is in fact the board teetering on the edge of stability with DDR400 is to increase the AGP voltage in the bios to the 1.6-1.7 range. This only works on motherboards where the AGP and northbridge voltage settings are linked though.

I don't get how you think Ubuntu works, when I said that it will freeze during the installation.

electromaster - Will try to set the speed to 333 and see, even though the 1GB stick states it's 400.

                      Quick edit - tried 333 with 1.6v for AGP. I get 0x0000001A on boot. Sometimes I get c0000221 "SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll".

I've seen blue screen on OS installs sometimes when two sticks of memory have been used. Installed with one fine, then I installed the second and it booted fine. Memtest was fine also. No issues once it was installed.

Yeah. Thing is,I get a BSOD with just ONE stick, mentioned in the OP. It will however boot up just fine with any other DDR stick.

Can you do a very thorough visual, preferably with magnification on the stick? Check each run for continuity and each leg of each chip.

Did that without any magnifying glass (I have really good vision) and nothing looks out of the ordinary.

i have seen an asus socket-A board bluescreen installing win2k but work fine with Linux and XP.
i still think the memory management driver may be the issue.

maybe try installing with other ram, then doing a driver/kernel update and putting the big ram back in.

Ubuntu is booted off a ODD (as funny as it sounds,I actually had to plug up a DVD-ROM to install Ubuntu),but no matter what I boot it from (it's Ubuntu 16),it will freeze just after doing the first part of setup which is setting up regional settings, setting KB language, splitting HDD in half (half for Vista and half for Ubuntu) and then finally setting the password. More exactly,it freezes during the second part of setup, where it actually installs Ubuntu.

And I still don't think it would be Vista's driver,or else any other stick would BSOD as well.
