    Wireless issues....

I've been having problems with my wireless network connection on my desktop computer since the day I got it 6 months ago. The problem isn't serious, but I think it's one of those issues that could get me into some strife.... even though this isn't my fault whatsoever.... so I need to fix it up ASAP.

My computer keeps connecting to an unsecured wireless network somewhere around me.... everytime I boot my PC up I have to connect it back into my network and it becomes a real pain (I have to admit that I have forgotten to reconnect it sometimes).

My wireless network is WEP protected for obvious reasons.
It happens only at bootup.... It forces itself to connect to the unsecured network instead of my personal network. I solved the issue by using the Asus WIFI AP solo application but then I don't get an IP address or internet connection. Is there some way to force it to connect automatically to my personal network and not the unsecured one??
I am running Windows Vista which could also play a role in this problem.

    Thanks.

I would like to do that but I simply can't because of the money that I have invested in my copy of Windows Vista. I have the ultimate edition of Vista which cost me $299AUD.... I can't scrap it because it's so expensive.... $299 excludes the software updates I had to buy for Vista as well. (E.g. Nero 8 for Vista). Dammit I fell for the pit of Microsoft again.... I got Vista Ultimate on a week into its release because of those ads about Vista security. So far I feel everything is opposite to what the ads on TV were talking about....

I recently went to buy a copy of Windows XP at a computer store for my client and they simply said that they don't sell XP no more and only Vista.

        Thanks.

I realize you are at the Far End of the Earth, but a computer store is still a bullshit place to buy what you need.

www.newegg.com will sell you WinXP anyday. The OEM Pro version is $119 USD, and a few bucks to ship to Oz.

I refuse to support or install Vista. I tell my clients: 1-800-CALL-BILL

They can spend the $150 or whatever the current fee is, to talk to some MS weenie in India. It's a hard old world... those who got suckered into buying Vista can either walk away from it, or deal with it.

Sorry to sound harsh, but MS has f*cked everybody with Vista. In this day and age, caveat emptor applies as never before.

you could try Wizmo (http://www.grc.com/wizmo/wizmo.htm) which has a "wanlock" feature. Not sure if it works for Vista, but I think so.

@bgavin: what's wrong with SP3? I've installed it a few days ago..... so far no problems, but no difference either.

@stevo again: have you checked if your school/college/uni is in the MSDNAA program?

the cure for vista is to install it in a machine where it wont matter how bloated or buggy it is.
look on youtube for vista install.
he installs it into a shredder.
sorry you got fucked.every early adopter of microsoft stuff gets it without ky jelly.

Now that really annoys the shits outta me. Talking to some rep in India or a similar country where all they do is most likely read off a screen from a list of instructions.

                Off topic but....

Living on the far end of this planet has it's nice side and it's bad side.
Good side is the peace and quiet down south and being seperated from everyone else which means far lesser illegal immigrants or widespread diseases speading.... hopefully. SUmmer is nice as well. On the down side it takes at least a day to travel to any country up North.... and it's closer to Antarctica so Winter is very dry and cold.

                Thanks.

                  Re: Wireless issues....

As noted above, every early adoptor of new Microsoft software gets fucked. I have two clients who both allowed auto-download of SP3 from Windows Updates... thanks to Microsoft, I have two machines to rebuild from scratch. I have released a blocking patch to all my clients that permanently prevents Windows Updates from download service packs.

Microsoft cannot get anything right in the first try. If I remember correctly SP6 from WinNT was so badly broken, they recalled it and replaced with SPP6a. I was contracting at Intel at the time, and had close exposure to the problems.

Watch the big shops and see how they perform. If they do not implement Vista, or SP3, there is a reason for it. That is reason is "grief". Vista is obvious in how much grief it causes... SP3 less obvious.

There is no compelling reason to migrate to SP3 right now. WinXP is mature and at end-of-life. They continue to release security patches, because Windows in toto is a piece of shit. That is not going to change. Microsoft is insidious in their quest to force you to Vista. Note the interface change in Office 2007... XP/SP3 has similar Vista-like "enhancements". No thanks.

In the real world (production mainframes), there are no changes made without thorough planning, then a complete system backup prior to the change. A back-out plan is devised and ready if/when things fail. Updating willy-nilly at 03:00 through an unattended Windows Update process is simply asking for catastrophe. MS released one hotfix that crucified the TPC/IP stack... I was called in after auto-update (to a server!!!) to fix this one. Dead in the water... zero connectivity after the patch.

                    Re: Wireless issues....

@ Stevo: before buying XP, try looking for network preferences. Open your wifi adapter properties, select the Wireless networks tab, select your network and click Configure: in the Authentication tab, uncheck "Enable IEEE 802.1X ..." and confirm.
2nd: make sure your router does broadcast its SSID (Vista wifi implementation has some glitches with hidden SSIDs: it should detect the network at first, then you can hidden it again).
3rd: configure the firewall to allow connection on your wifi adapter.

I thin you can tell Windows which networks are preferred (it tries to contact them before others available) and IIRC this should be in the Wireless networks tab again.

                      Re: Wireless issues....

I managed to get hold of a copy of Windows XP Media center edition the other day.... last one a store had.
Anyway I haven't had anymore issues with my wireless connections and overall I am happy that my computer has sped up significantly. I still have Vista on another computer to fiddle around with but apart from that Vista really sucks when I compare it with Windows XP.

                      Thanks.

                        Re: Wireless issues....

Is it true your issue was about a wifi cross connect problem?
I have secured and unsecured wifi's around me and every one is on channel six.
Except mine, I set my router to channel eleven and stay away from the others.
Less noise up there, no chance of connecting eroneously.
