    Intel IHS thermal filler

I got a Pentium Dual-Core e5400 that idle at 50C and 83C at full load, newly applied thermal paste, stock slim intel HSF that came with it. Is clear that it is not a faulty on die thermal sensor, because the HSF was warmer than usual and the bottom of the board where the CPU sits were hot to touch. And the vcore are in spec as well, 1.024V idle & 1.280V full load. I have no idea on what the history of the processor, but as far as I could tell it come from a custom built PC with untampered warranty sticker on the CPU socket lever. From the board I removed the processor from is a ECS G41T-M6 and it doesn't offers any OC functions. I got a couple of e5xxx processors in my hand, and they all would idle at about 38C and full load at 55-60C.

As far as my knowledge takes me, there is 2 types intel IHS, the one which is soldered onto the die and ones which are using thermal grease. I wasn't sure the e5400 falls under which category as it was unconfirmed by overclock.net forum.

Before the e5400, I also has another 2 unit of Core 2 Duo E6300 that just overheats for no reason with everything checks out. I even put a much bigger HSF and it just able to shave off about 3-5C. But the E6300 core 2 duo were confirmed to be having unsoldered IHS. Is it possible that the cheapo TIM used by Intel has dried out and now causing overheating ?
Can anybody confirm what type of IHS is the e5400 having ?

    Thanks everybody

Unfortunately I can't answer your question but I will say this... of the thousands of computers I've worked on (75%+ of which are/were Core2s) I have NEVER had a problem with the IHS.
