Willa, at first the SMD description deceived me: I really believed in the existence of a Ceramic-based motherboard!
Anyway, all Gigabytes with a D in their name employ polymer caps.

well i think iwill get the prize for the least can capacitors

still after reading xbitlabs review of abit ix38 and the incredibly toasty digital vrm, i think i will pass on digital vrm technology

dont you think its newsworthy seeing smd chip type caps on motherboards, it would be a different technique to recap although not a problem. still they can be damaged much easier than radial caps (detached from their bases) by careless users.

The review is not sounding to enthusiastic about this so called "digital VRM" whatever this marketing BS language thing does mean.
I think it simply is the expected shift to higher switching frequencies, where MLCC`s are all what is needed except of a few bulk caps.

Sure, a nice little board, nice bios and monitoring, but from my point fo view nothing that is THAT far better than may be any of the Gigabyte solid polymer boards with a lot of phases.

          Re: motherboards with SMD capacitors

I have to know what a Digital Vrm is before admitting is superior to any sturdy multiphase vrm available: I can't see the digital part of it except for a digitally controlled mosfet (does it exist?) and Google doesn't help me much.
Anyway Xbitlabs review points out this kind of vrms tends to run hotter than traditional ones: since heat is a big issue and the Atx location of vrm is a bad cooled corner (at P2 times vrms were surely cooler than actual ones), I think this is a bad cocktail that will show its side effects in future.

Thanks for posting the real question: SMD are machine soldered components. I think there can be some issues if weldings are precise and tiny enough such as chip ones, because this requires a very sharp soldering pen and good handcraft.

Gateway had a board they used in their Slot A Athlon Boxen.. It didn't have any electrolytics at all.. I had one at one time.. it was a decent board, but no overclocking or anything like that..
