umm, i have to disagree and say that badcaps can cause the issue of cmos settings resetting as i experienced with my asus p4c800 that had a board full of osts. only when i fully recapped all of the osts off the board did the problem of the cmos resetting go away and i have ruled out that its not my power supply, bad battery, poor battery contacts or esd issues as i did not tinker with it to cause it to throw up cmos errors.

therefore, my point is that bad caps on a motherboard and cause the board to throw up all sorts of weird issues. so anyway the ts must get rid of all the possible bad caps on the board including the 6.3v filter ones scattered around the board. its also possible that a crappy power supply can kill caps on the board and then cause the board to behave strangely due to the board's caps going out of spec.

Thanks for that response momaka. I've checked battery terminals and they seemed fine.

I'm wondering if the CMOS issue is somehow related to the computer randomly restarting itself like the owner claimed? It seems to be running cooler as I stated to have cleaned dust and replaced thermal compound.

Overheating CPU can cause a lot of different symptoms, restarts are a common one. Not sure about it affecting CMOS but it wouldn't surprise me.

But it's not overheating, that was my initial thought due to ramping of the CPU fan but even after cleaning and change of thermal compound it still randomly restarted after been left on for some time. That's where I'm stumped

if you only get this issue with the psu removed or unplugged, i'v had it before.
you need to trace the battery + though to the chip.
it could be a bad diode, but in my case it was a coroded track.

I'll try that. What I'm questioning though is if the CMOS issue could be related to the random restarts or if that's a separate issue.

                  Interesting.
So bad caps can cause anything then. I guess the O/P really needs to replace the caps on this board then - the KZGs, that is.
