    Windows XP install freezes....

I am trying to reinstall Windows XP onto my Toshiba P25-5093 laptop and I'm having this issue where it will freeze at the blue screen with the words "Setup is starting Windows" in the bottom left corner. It loads all the setup drivers fine without and issue but it will freeze at this point, even with a different Windows CD.
This laptop originally had XP Home on it and then I upgraded it to Vista home basic yesterday where I felt I made the wrong move so this morning I decided to reinstall XP back onto it with no luck. I also deleted the Vista partition so my HDD is completely blank.
I also reset the BIOS back to factory defaults with no luck at all. How can I fix this issue?'?

    Thanks.

If this were a desktop, I'd suspect a stability problem. That seems less likely with a laptop, but I'd run a diagnostic test on the hard drive. You could also try running memtest86 on it. I'm not sure how common memory errors are on laptops, but my brother once had a mysterious problem resolved when we discovered one of his SODIMMs had gone bad.

... although, I don't think I've seen unstable machines freeze at the point you describe; usually it manifests as a phantom "missing file on CD" error.

When installing OS ensure boot virus protection is disabled in Bios.

Use Hirens boot disc to erase the primary partition in first NTFS (4kb clusters) then try FAT32 (4kb clusters). Also Hirens boot disc has other utilities but you may feel bad about using these if you don't have the licenses.

Run memtest boot disc for 2 or so hours.

Try yet another XP install disc. If you are using backed up versions written to CDR they frequently oxidize too much for windows install's liking more than original discs. To rule out install disc. Clean disc drive with a good drive cleaning kit, maybe use atleast 2 to make sure as much dirt is removed from the lens. Burn a fresh pirate version of XP (such as XP Performance Edition V3 - available on google rapidshare links) at a maximum burn speed of 4x, after writting remove the disc without touching it (edge method) lay it somewhere so the dye can cool down. Try with this perfect copy later. If fail then can rule out discs and drive lens.

Don't feel bad about removing that rubbish OS, you did the right thing, nobody should have to live with Vista I don't know why it's acceptable to abuse so many innocent PC users with that crap and it's resource wasting for no gain floating 3D windows wankage.

I've noticed something similar when going back and forth between Windows and Linux.

Try wiping the hard drive completely. There are several good programs for this. One is here:

Ok, thanks guys. I got XP working on my system again.

Instead of using the XP Professional CD, I used my WIndows XP MCE DVD and all is fine now. This laptop originally had problems reading CDs so I think that may have an issue affecting the Windows install process.

Previously the optical drive in this laptop did not read CDs. Yesterday it could read any CD I threw at it for some strange reason. So I thought i'd try my XP CD.... but that didn't work.

          Thanks.

I second the suggestion that the hard drive needs to be wiped clean.

Another disk that you can do this with is the Super Grub boot disk. You can also make partitions, and boot a unbootable Windows installation with it

If you see this with an 0x7B stop, it is a driver problem on a fresh install.

When XP switches from text setup to protected mode, it expects to load the protected mode storage drivers. You get the above bug check stop if the drivers are absent or wrong.

If you have a genuine floppy in your system, the drivers are installed via floppy. If no floppy, you have to slip stream the drivers into your install CD.

Check out www.driverpacks.net for more information about building a universal install CD. Mine is built using their MassStorage, CPU, and Chipset packs. These will get you a bootable system every time.
