Would somebody please publish the cap values for WAP54G and WRT54G?

Re: Who makes reliable wireless products?

Thank you for the post. I ordered one of these and the associated WRT54GL for a client.

It is probably worth recapping both right from the start.

I assume two are 10mm, the smaller is 8mm? What is the worst case length?

Any make or series, or purely shit craps?

Re: Who makes reliable wireless products?

I was looking at some favorable reviews for the SMC wireless-N boxes, but can't find enough info to take the rist.

The TrendNET looks like a sleeper. Not well known in the US, but known abroad. It seems to find high marks with users who own it.

My problem is the client has a new Dell laptop that probably does not have wireless-N built in. She is going wireless for the first time, so I figure Linksys is a safe bet for compatibility.

Re: Who makes reliable wireless products?

Still listening... Unfortunately I have both alread on order, but can always RMA if they don't work out.

The client won't step up to $500 commercial grade boxes, so I have to find something at the consumer level. The D-Link boxes seem to have some issues, even though they are pricey. Can't find any reviews on the SMC Barricade except one... and I need an Access Point to match the router. Plus, it has to support her new Dell which is probably b/g only.

thanks to my linksys experience i have zero interest in their products. my zyxel router unfortunately it supports only wep but connect every time and always available when it was activated. the WAPs they need reboot almost every day. i lost interest and am only cable again. i need to offload two waps

                  i was using intel client

Re: Who makes reliable wireless products?

B4 trowing away your wrt54g, try out Tomato firmware. I used dd-wrt for several years and thought that this would be the best possible firmware i ever have seen.
But hell, tomato really impressed me, the creator is probably a very clever and strict programmer, you even have not to reconfigure your router after firmware upgrade (i mean from an older tomato to a newer).
Sure, Tomato does not have that much blinks and features, but it simply is amazingly stable & fast and QOS has worked for me the first time (in dd-wrt it is not working, some rumors say, that it was done with purpose, to increase sales of the pro version).
And don`t forget to really clear NVram.
I usually have done it with an fresh TFTP flash or with several Nvram erase commands via the web GUI.

If your though with linux, open wrt is probably the way to go. It is very fast, stable as the hardware can be, and sure, very lean and fast.
And yet, you can add as many features as you like, even a GUI is developed now.

If that does all not suit you, simply build your own router, Just grab a mini ITX , or a wrap board and put on it what you like. I used Fli4l, and several other of those mini Linux / FreeBsd router / firewall solutions and any of those was not bad and highly stable (but hardware limited, i used mainly very old systems).

To be honest, i spend a lot of time, figuring out how this stuff works. I spend the time as necessary for any router solution i used, and in the end any of those worked for me.
ATM i am using a AVM Fritz box 7170, which is basically an linux based router, with a ISDN , analog line, DSL modem and network switch hardware.
After a year of bad (unstable, too cpu hungry )firmware, i have replaced my Wrt54g, ADSL2 modem combination lately, as the current firmware is runing stable as i was used from AVM.

Re: Who makes reliable wireless products?

Gonzo, I know how it feels to dig and research into hardware just to know how it works.

But... wireless routers and WAPs are just tools I have to use for Windows clients. My clients don't require QoS or anything that sophisticated. All they do is connect to the internet for mail and business use.

I saw an in-depth procedure about some White Russian coding for the firmware, and how to handle your Linksys if it bricks (dies) on you. Lots of good hacking, but far too many unpaid hours for my situation. I am willing to try Tomato if it is easy to install and reliable. I am also willing to recap the Linksys if needed. I do not want to spend many unpaid hours hacking at routers if I can buy a reasonable solution.

Re: Who makes reliable wireless products?

That is simply what i want. Unstable routers are the pain in the as for those who care about private users.
Business clients have to pay for good hardware, and i have no mercy to let them pay my efforts, if they buy crap.
Honestly, apart from AVM (which is a small Germen business) and Linksys WRt54g i don`t know many reliable SOHO router.
Zyxel has probably the best non open source firmware, but sure they are using crap capacitors too at least in their SOHO units.

Most important thing in SOHO routers is, that there is absolutely no brand, who does not offer some lemons.
So you will never hear me, to swear on Linksys or any other brand. You have to test any unit by your self, as they can change anything from version to version.

SOHO market products are like anything intended for the consumer dirty cheap shit, produced to be dumped.

Re: Who makes reliable wireless products?

I have a WAP54Gv.2, And it has worked flawlessly since I purchased it several years ago. I did upgrade the firmware a while back. I used the latest available from Linksys, as I was afraid to try third party firmware.

Well, maybe flawlessly is overstated. I do recall having to reset it back to factory defaults and then hooking up to it with a wire to set the wireless back up. This was after changing internet providers, and router.

Willa, I don't know what you do to them to make them fail. Maybe the version makes a big difference.
