    DVD....archiving

Ok...so ya have a lot of DVDs. You don't want them to get all screwed up by taking them in and out of the case and in and out of the player etc etc etc.

So..you get this idea of somehow transferring the data on the DVD on to your hard drive. Simple enough, right????

    Apparently not......

I've been trying Daniusoft's DVD ripper, but I run into a problem trying to rip TV show episodes. MASH and Hogan's Heroes are just two examples. They are 4:3. When I rip them, they come out stretched so everyone looks fat. Also, it seem I can only do MPEG-2. Nothing else will play via WMP or the PS3.

Anyone have experience with some good SW????

      Re: DVD....archiving

HDDs are so cheap nowadays... why should i divx/xvid them?
all i do is remove unnecessary languages/subs/menus with cloneDVD. when i come upon a DL DVD, i try to compress it so it eventually fits on a single layer disc in case i want to burn it.
ratdvd and dvdshrink work fine if you want to save space.

AnyDVD and Nero make a very nice combination as well.

DVE Fab Platinum will let you control the process. I use it to edit out all the menus, languages, subtitles, etc. When I get a DL that is still too long, I split it onto two standard DVDs. I prefer doing this over compressing. I don't like artifacting.

I see where some of you are going, but I don't want to burn back onto a DVD. The programs mentioned do not allow for the DVD to be ripped to a file that can be played by the PS3.

The thing I'm running into is that for some reason, the ripped file isn't the same as the DVD.....the aforementioned DVDs of TV shows in 4:3.

I still wonder if I'm losing quality as well.......

Unless I'm doing something wrong.......which is quite possible.

What file format does the PS3 take? Nero Recode can convert it to many different file types.

                HP Monitor Mash-up
                by branch592
I picked up an HP w1907 LCD display with the 2 second to black problem at my local Goodwill outlet store. Took it apart looking for bad caps but found no obvious problems. Tested the monitor again and found an all white screen. Playing around with it, I discovered that reversing the top two CCFLs make the backlight work until power save mode kicked in. Noticed later that the LVDS cable had a small tear in it. Thought that was the cause of the all white screen, but found out later it probably isn't.

So I picked up an HP L1908w display at the same store a few days later, planning...

Help with finding a video editor
                by ncovert
Okay, I need a new video editor, but need suggestions.

                Prerequisites:
-Able to edit .MPG/.MOD (MPEG2) files.
-100% free, no trial, no payment.
-Able to add titles and overlays.
-Needs to run on Windows XP.

The reason I need this is because WMM 2 that comes with XP crashes every time you try to edit MPEG2 files. It will import properly, but crash when it comes to playing the video.

                Can anyone help?

Bush LED19982HD 19 " - "The video format is not supported".
                by Smartec82
                Hello everyone.
I'm from Portugal and a few days ago I bought on ebay a led tv Bush LED19982HD 19 "in the UK.
I asked at the time the seller if bear to the MPEG4 format, and he replied that Free view will work. I've been watching the service manual of this TV, which is a 17mb62-2.6, and it said that supported mpeg2 and mpeg4, so I bought. When I received it I connect it, saying "The video format is not supported".
Here in Portugal the format of digital terrestrial television is mpeg4 and the tv came with MPEG2, and have TVs with the same main board 17mb62 working...

                WebRTC Discussion
                by TractorGear
I'll describe what I think I know thus far. I've just discovered that there is some kind of service or function called "WebRTC" that will deliver a computer User's real IP Address despite their efforts at hiding it. At this point I'm calling it malware, because it performs exactly like malware and thus far I can find no positive purpose for it's existence, other than vague and ambiguous generalities like "it makes things better" and "improves gronkgockulating performance" and other meaningless mish-mash dribble-drabble intended to distract and satisfy substandard...

Thermal Pads and Bad IPM's: What if it's NOT Heat?
                by Jonny Accelerant
Working on a Maxent MX-42HPM20 and had a thought that I think merits a separate thread.

My thought process is as follows:

My Plasma TV seems to have a bad ZSUS IPM (unconfirmed) and maybe a bad YSUS also (no reason to think this yet), and while doing research on these IPM's I get the impression that it's a common failure, and while there isn't much consensus on what causes these expensive IPM's to go bad, most people assume that it's heat, as they run hot, and there's this (11mm thick) thermal pad behind them. You'd think it was there for a reason. They get hot.
