Re: XP product key / service pack idiocy

Product key rejection _does_ have to do with the service pack level, but not on all machines, weirdly enough.

There's probably a 'range' of serial numbers that were associated with levels like 'Gold', 'SP1', and 'SP2'. Some manufacturers used them, some didn't.

I've had machines made in 2002 use the OEM cd from SP2, but I've had machines made in 2005 that wouldn't work with anything but the 'Gold' CD - although it -will- work with a slipstreamed SP2 made from a Gold.

So it's not the service packs themselves, it's the microsoft construction of the actual CD's that use the service packs.

I find it easiest to keep a pile of the system restore CD's if I can. At least of the 'from the factory' XP install disks.

Mind you, Windows 2000 can be that picky as well. I've seen the same 'This key won't work with an SP4 CD, you need an SP2 CD' there.

Now this makes sense. They just used the "service pack" as the cutoff point. Good info.
A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.

Very many corporate keys got leaked when XP SP0/RTM was out, Microsoft blacklisted these in SP1

However with the drawback that very many corporate customers licenses where no longer valid!

So in SP2 this number of blacklisted keys was greatly reduced again...

Ryobi 36V (aka 40V) 6Ah Faulty Battery Pack
          by brispuss
Purchased a Ryobi 36V 6Ah battery pack maybe just over a year ago.

Battery pack had been used on about 3 or 4 occasions for powering a cordless lawnmower. I was wanting to use this battery pack again recently, but on checking the battery charge state via the battery pack test button, there was no LED indication at all of charge state which suggested the pack was fully discharged.

I found this to be odd as I usually fully recharge battery packs shortly after use. So either the pack developed some sort of fault which completely discharged the pack cells (after recharging),...

Dell Latitude 5500 series change service tag (serial number)
          by techman125
          Hello.

I hope I'm in the right forum.
I have been searching for quite a while, before finding this site.
I frequently replace mainboards in the Latitude 5500, 5510 and 5520 models.
Changing the asset tag is pretty straight forward, but from what I've read changing the service tag isn't possible unless you can use a CH341A programmer and hex edit the bios.
Dell would probably be able to do it but sending them a used board and paying them defeats most of the cost savings over new.

While testing a used board and swapping parts, a 5510 just out of...

Dell E6400 PT434 type Battery Charging Stuck at 1%. Battery Pinouts?
          by Bowline
My question pertains to understanding the control circuity inside a Dell PT434 type battery used in Dell E6400, E6410 and other Dell notebooks?

Does anyone have a circuit diagram for the inside of a Dell PT434 battery and/or a description of how the control lines work to control this battery?

My reason for asking is I have a battery which I cannot get to charge beyond 1% in a Dell E6410 or E6400.
The LED bar graph charge indicator on the battery shows one LED lighted when the info button is pressed.
I have tried multiple different Dell power adapters. My Dell...

Dell Inspiron 5515 service tag problem
          by Kalman27
          Hello everybody,

Not sure I'm in the right place, if so please let me know where to post my question.

I had to replace a motherboard in a Dell Inspiron 5515, and the seller put a fake service tag - LK12345, I would like to change it if possible. Unfortunately, the motherboard is not in manufacturing mode.

Can somebody please give me some advice on how to do it?

          Thank you.
