Bizarre failure on AMD Firepro 2270

I've never seen something like this happen before. This 3 year old computer came in because it wasn't getting video anymore. Hmmmm. Cracked it open to see this:

I was so puzzled by it at first. It looks like the heatsink just bloated up like a balloon. And, it actually still has perfect contact on the GPU die. We ended up sawing open the heatsink, and found that piece of material and small piece of metal inside it. I'm not sure what the material is, but it's very stiff and feels strong but it's easily bendable and feels a little like light sandpaper. It seems to be soaked in rubbing alcohol I guess the heat just made the liquid expand over time. That's strong metal, too. Planned obsolescence?

    Haha jeez

I've never seen a heatsink do that.

Contaminants in that "refrigerant," or whatever phase-change substance.

It's corroding the aluminum, and the gas generated pressurizes the inside of the heatsink/heatpipe contraption. Gray aluminum oxide is visible.

Exactly in the same way cheep caps swell without ever being connected.

No. In a heatpipe, there's "head space" for the liquid to expand and boil. If it was hydrostatic expansion, being completely full of liquid, it would've swollen the first time it heated up.

Hmmm... Don't Cheapo Teapos or Crapxons sometimes take 3 years before they finally pop? Oh, "Jee."

This is apparently a very common issue on these cards, especially in Dells. I believe Dell will RMA these as it's a known issue, there've been quite a few posts about it on reddit.

Oh, this is so bad. I actually feel bad for the card.

Yes, bad heatsink design : http://community.spiceworks.com/topi...elated-failure
The HD6450 with a similar heatsink have the same issue.

Cool, thanks for letting me know. I was just guessing.

Wow, that video card is warped! And I was worried about board flex on my s939 and s775 boards.

I guess time to keep an eye on eBay for these. I wonder if a reflow will fix a warped card like the one above. Be funny if it did, actually.

I have peltir element glued to heatsink with something thick and sticky like putty... it cant be separate with force or heat without risk of breaking ceramic or damaged semiconductor layers due to force (eg if try twisted, pulled, lifted)... method that I am using is a single thread for needle (thin and firm thread of pure polyester that cant break with bare hands without glowes), and using it like a saw between heatsink and peltir. I holding a heatsink with knee against table. It slowly cut throug putty and release glued parts. It is slow proces, but preserve undamaged component and heatsink....

Seeking Advice on Enhancing Heatsink for Main Processor on SAMSUNG TV Motherboard
                        by Ven
                        Hello everyone,

I'm looking to upgrade the heatsink on the main processor of my TV's motherboard for better cooling performance.

The current heatsink is a square-shaped one (2.8cm x 2.8cn) with a basic design, and I believe a more efficient heatsink could help with thermal management and potentially extend the life of the TV.

I'd appreciate any advice on the best type of heatsink to use, specific product recommendations, and tips for installation.

If you've done a similar upgrade, I'd love to hear about your experience and any challenges you...

I've got a control display for a Carrier chiller that I'm trying to understand what the common failure with these boards are. This is the board in question https://www.supplyhouse.com/Carrier-...arquee-Display all of them seem to develop a failure with the up and down arrow buttons on the right side of the display, the esc and enter keys I've never seen fail. Once these boards are plugged in they run 24/7, you used to have to press extremely hard with the end of the blunt screwdriver and you could still get the arrows to work but now it has completely stopped working. The button...
