    Who makes a good UPS?

Pretty open-ended. I'm pricing out several of 'em at different price points, and would prefer one that's not going to blow up, catch on fire, scare small children, or anything like that. Also having usable software is a plus.

    Thanks!

APC makes like, the only non-China-made ones. I like them, the PowerChute software's prettyeasy to use too. My ES-series (top of the economical line, 450 watts, 750va) doesn't generate that much heat and it's stable. I'm pretty sure it won't blow up, but the beep it makes is really loud, and when its out of power, the beeping noises it makes after that is pretty sary. But it won't scare them during normal use.

My last APC, lightning came right through it and cooked one of the systems in the capacitor showdown. In their defense though, it was a bad strike, it actually caused some electrical damage to the shop as well (had to replace the entire main load center).

Well APC it is. I'll let you all know how it works out.

i think the back-ups rs units are good for home use. the batteries seem to last longer than the smart ups units which i have pulled out toasted batteries from a few times. a few others on the forum report similar experience with smart ups.

its a pity because the graphing and other interesting stuff is nice on the smart ups

can disable the alarm completely in software on the rs units. the software is pretty crap though.

schneider electric purchased APC and they make merlin gerin ups units which i had negative experience with. one by one they would commit suicide out of warranty following a power cut.

i am ok with apc, i have no dead units and greece is a pretty good testing ground for ups.

I have one Nexxtech that handles my server, router and ADSL modem right now and it's worked several times now and I find it better than those serial APC units. I could never figure out how the hell to interface to them.
            I still prefer APC though.
