Yup java and flash can make your cpu do that some times, but as long as you lave good thermal paste a clean heatsink and a working fan it shouldn't get too high! How hot does your cpu get? This is probably a problem with your cooling.

even scrolling a page with a lot of content can cause cpu spikes, not just plugins.

Flash or Javascript. Fortunately things are getting better with HTML5.

I agree with Reaper, there's a problem with cooling the CPU. In normal operation the CPU temp will increase with the workload but if it is jumping sky high then it is a cooling problem.

Also a very outdated browser will do that. I have this problem with Opera 11/12 on certain websites. Best example is with IE6, though. The only websites it won't choke on is oldschool plain HTML ones (you know, the ones without flash banners and simple GIF graphics - remember those? ).

I suspect scripts are the root of the problem. Flash only adds insult to the injury .

First thing is first get a decent cpu monitor. Coretemp / HWmonitor. Second it is always a good idea to ensure your browser is up to date. You would be surprised of the memory leaks in the older browsers. Memory usage = cpu usage. The posters above are correct. If your cpu is not colling properly then you got a problem. Clean out your fan and heatsink and also renew the thermal paste. Clean both heatsink and cpu with something like isopropranol or a cpu cleaner. (it breaks down the old paste) finally decent cpu paste (be sparing to much does the reverse job) Attach and check your monitors if no better come back to us.

Thanks guys; i did the CPU thermal paste, cleaned fan,it's much better but still goes high,on a sports streaming it goes as high as 76c and fan speeds up and on just browsing on most sites 65 degrees,
i've red that this HP DV5 1254 US this is Linux Ubuntu 14.04, runs hotter than other models,
my other HP DV6 1259 with Win7 runs much cooler 35c

Oh, it's a laptop, now I get it. 65C seems a bit high, but still close to what I would expect from most dv5-1xxx notebooks. What are your gpu temps? The cpu isn't soldered on the motherboard like the gpu so I wouldn't worry about it too much, as long as the gpu isn't too hot. But if the cpu is at 76C, then the gpu is not far behind. Can you try a windows install with all of the correct drivers and codecs? I have the feeling that the gpu isn't being used for the decoding and the cpu is getting most of the load.

For a DV5 these temperatures are normal. Actually they're low. "Normal" CPU operating temperature for that is around 80-85C. Yeah, their cooling sucks big time.

The GPU on that model is integrated into the Northbridge, it's the Intel GMA4500MHD. These are known to fail sometimes, but it's a very rare event. So i would say you are safe. There isn't much you can do about the temperature anyway. Besides drilling some extra vent holes in the bottom case of course.

Wow 55-58 average and 61 max, that's great! The phenom II in my DV6 is between 47-53 when watching video, when using the on-board graphics. Mine has a better cooler and a better thermal design and isn't that much cooler than yours. So I would say that those temps are perfect!

Re: Browsing some sites CPU Temp goes higher!

Technically memory leaks (versus memory wasting) should not cause more CPU utilization. Memory leaks means that memory that was allocated but lost all handles, which means the program has no way of accessing that memory again - so at worst that memory would eventually swap out. During swapping the CPU has to idle while waiting for the hard drive to read/write and will cool down somewhat.

This is contrast to memory wasting - where a program could keep multiple tables around and even do linear searches on them - this will cause more CPU activity.

Those temperatures do not look that bad. Recently I had to deal with my i7 - it was starting to beep. When I ran thermal monitoring it was hitting 90C (and was going higher - until I stopped the CPU) when I was running full blast, all four cores (8 threads) compiling for Gentoo. This wasn't normal - it had been just fine a while ago. Opened the case, used compressed air to blow out the massive amount of dust that built up on the heatsink/fan, and all is better, down to 79C or so when running full blast.

                                        Here's an unusual one...

This is a Gallenkamp oven, used in a laboratory space, goes up to 220 Celcius, but is usually maintained at about 115 Celcius. Used for drying glassware, molecular sieves, and so on. Oven is in excess of 20 years old.

It heats up fine, there is an orange light on the front that indicates that the unit is heating, and when it reaches the preset temp, the orange light goes out. All good so far.

However, after the preset temp is reached, the temperature continues to rise, power to the heating elements isn't cut off.

Hi to all, my motherboard (bought second hand as faulty, but now working after cleaning the ram slots) have a strange failure that shows 0 Celsius degrees in BIOS, because of that, the CPU goes to protection mode and gets stuck at 800Mhz.

Since its a 8-9 Intel generation, I know the CPU temp is the hottest temp of the cores (as i have read in intels documentation) so its not a diode or sensor on the board.

External temperature (motherboard temp) is working OK, 27ºC more or less

In windows, all the software I have tested shows correct the Core temps
                                        ...

Is 98C vram temp are safe? Less demanding games goes 80ish.

Funny thing, there were old non stock thermal pads very botched, so i replaced them. After, temperatures remained the same, but performance (fps) improved significantly. With both thermal pad application GPU core temp was similar.

furmark goes about 104C, amperage keeps rising so do temps.

Samsung UN55NU6900F Standyby voltage is 1V higher than expected, is this a problem?

This is the zombie UN55NU6900F I wrote about in this original post.

It originally was completely dead with no standby voltage. After some poking around, I found the solder at RM819 (see pictures) failed. I removed it from the board, it tested fine, resoldered it, and now the TV works.

The expected standby voltage at the reference pin is specified to be 11.8V but it's reading 12.8V. Couple questions:

                                        1. What could cause the standby voltage to be 1V higher than expected
                                        2. Is this a problem
                                        3. Could it have led to the failure at RM819, or was that...

Hi, this is my personal laptop, which the original board (lets call it Board A) blew up PU8700 (TPS51486), making a hole on the board, i had left the laptop at my desk one day with the battery fully charged and didn't touch it for a week, but when i tried to turn it on it didn't
Thought the battery was dead, so i plugged in the charger then tried to power on, the power LED blinked once, charged LED still orange, unplugged the charger, plugged in again and I noticed the "magic smoke" smell, so i unplugged the charger, removed the back cover and saw the blown IC (the "magic...
