Panasonic toughbook vs Compuke presario cq57

tell me this: why is a toghbook from 2008 faster than a presarion cq57 from 2011? the CPU is the same clock speed, both are duel core, both use the same SSD, same OS install, etc.
the presario takes 56 seconds to boot and the toughbook 10 seconds. whats going on here? is compuke that much crap?
Things I've fixed: anything from semis to crappy Chinese $2 radios, and now an IoT Dildo....

I wondered the same thing when I got my Toshiba laptop, although the difference in performance wasn't as bad as what you're seeing. I can only guess that the newer low-end hardware really is that bad, and benchmarks are designed to give newer hardware higher scores to try to sell more new computers. I don't think it's actually the manufacturer of the computer or its hardware (the Compaq is probably made by Quanta, just like my Toshiba).

What CPUs do they have? Did you make sure the SATA controller is in AHCI mode? Does the Compaq still have its factory OS image? How much RAM do they have?

ramspeed is the same 5300, both controllers were in AHCI mode and boot time is measured from the time I tapped enter at the GRUB menu.
both have 4gb of ram, the compaq has an AMD a300 apu and toughbook has an Intel centrino duo.
both have the same (cloned) opensuse 13.2 install, then to push things further in favor of the compuke the image was installed on it then cloned to the toughbook.

          Linux - good.
disable any graphic loader and boot in framebuffer mode.
          then watch the boot text.

unless it's just generally slower on one - which may be a drive-interface settings issue, it may be hanging for a while probing something on the board.

one of my machines does that probing the ide bus - it may be trying different ata modes to find slow devices.
(i dont have any, but it may still be looking)

Clock speed isn't everything. There's also the cache, core, bus speed, instructions ecc.

Something like a 2 GHz Core 2 Duo will usually be faster than a 2.8 GHz Pentium D simply from the processor design - it's a lot more efficient.

Looking at the two, the CQ57 has an AMD E300 or E350 or other similar chip which is a low-end budget processor. Fairly slow honestly but they're made to be as cheap as possible.

The Toughbook most likely has a Core 2 Duo chip. The Core 2 Duos were made to be mid to high end for their time and as such are generally going to be faster than any low end AMD currently. The Haswell Celerons are starting to out perform the original C2D Mobile chips but AMD isn't.

the panny has centrino duo. IIRC it has a long architecture much like a P4, but from the era of C2Ds obviously. and yeah, the AMD in the compuke is a E300.

centrino duo just means a dual core intel with intel wifi and chipset.

IIRC that was the moinker used for core duo's with the centrino platform... but C2D's may have also been covered (I've seen them on i945 chipsetted systems, which were both).

The AMD APU in the Compaq explains the slowness. They are absolutely hopeless performers. An older C2D like in the Toughbook will easily outperform it.

That's right. The Centrino name for the CPUs went on thoughout the C2D era and was only dropped with the introduction if the Core i_

The E300 is very, very, very slow as a CPU. Clock speed isn't everything. It does have a fairly capable graphics core though.
