    How do I....?

    Hello Everyone,

I want to use Joomla to create a website but I'm not sure what I need software wise.

I am trying to create a Joomla based site on my 30MB of web space provided by my ISP, but I can't get it to install/work.

I think I'm missing something.... or I don't know how install it. One of my friends told me that I need an FTP application to get it to work.... something like CoreFTP or similar.

    Thanks.

    Re: How do I....?

After looking at Joomla, I see it uses PHP, and MySQL. Your ISP probably doesn't (I know mine doesn't) have support for PHP, and especially not support for MySQL). I suggest you go with a cheap host that does

I got it to run locally on my PC last night. I'm gonna see what Joomla can do.... then use it to create a website of some sort...

You can try it on free Yahoo(Geocities). They run BSD/Apache.

I think Apache is only available on the Geocities version that a subscription has to be paid for? I don't think the free version of Geocities offers this.

            well don't know about Joomla

The FTP program is what I use to use to upload the pages pics whatever

Stands for "File Transfer Protocol" and is way old but used to work well
some freebie sites tend to force you to upload your site (pages etc) via web browser.
            I use to hate them.

            http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_Transfer_Protocol

There are quite a few different programs for this, some paid some free some good some crap I suppose
            I use to use CuteFTP

Like I said dont know about Joomla but maybe it has some upload client in it

On the web side I suppose as pointed out above it depends on what the server will run and what your ISP will allow to run on there servers.

So you would need to check the details of that with them or any servers you wish to have host your site on.

I never really got into that, a simple HTML web page said all I needed to say

The power of Notepad and HTML Code...I am not that desperate FP did me
Ok yeah so real designers were using Dreamweaver at the time

who's your ISP? I installed Joomla for my site once. had it all customized but decided it took too much work and used Community Server instead. I think Mambo (the other fork of Joomla) might be easier to install.
