    Goontrons main (AMD) rig V3

follow up of my thread here: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=41099
got my new rig built up and running. its a nice unit with a 4 core AMD phenom at the same clock as my old Pentium (left in the) D(ust). it has RAID and hot swapping drive controllers, and the all important IDE port for my quantum bigfoot. now with Se7en pro installed it also had a graphics card installed and has a 400w Delta PSU.

i replaced the stock CPU cooler with one from arctic. i got for free since the fan was dead, and mind you the unit didn't even touch a CPU, it still had the layer of compound that the factory puts on the copper surface. a dell tornado fan was put on in replacement.
the main OS is OpenSUSE Tumbleweed running from the WD.

Replace that Phenom with a 9550 (or any that ends in "50") because of an AMD F-up. They're defective!

erm, why does the title of the thread suggest this is an Intel rig?
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

It's not a BIOS bug. It's a defect and AMD pretty much recalled them.

Nice enjoyable upgrade in performance, yes?

Although, IMO Pentium D is not all that bad. The long architecture and all makes it still handle flash and video encoding/decoding well. Just not very efficient due to high clock speed (for those times) combined with the relatively large manufacturing process (what was it, 90 nm?).

Yeah, please don't remind me .
Those Bigfoots make my 5400 RPM IBM Deskstar 305030 seem like some sci-fi alien technology.

Last time I tried to install Windows XP on my 3.2 GB Bigfoot, it took over 2 hours for the setup to finish. No, HDD was NOT set to PIO mode, although it could have been dropping into it due to bad sectors. All I remember is that every now and then, the HDD would make a click-click-beep sound (i.e. sector reallocation), and then go back to normal "rocks in a coffee grinder inside a tin box" trashing operation .
                      Ugh what a slow turd

The only thing I find interesting about that HDD is that on the back, there is a hole and a clear sticker on top of it, through which you can see the top (or bottom?) platter and arm for one of the heads. As the HDD initializes, you can see the arm move in a very cool pattern - which is what makes that unique initialization sound of the Bigfoot.

Let's face it, AMD makes inefficient unreliable products. Can't fix that as easy as you can fix a thread title! lol

TBH there may be a reason most of my operational computer crap is intel (minus my main rig which is twin Operons)... AMD doesn't make junk but for the most part, at least since the core2, intel has made good, solid products.

IMO, AMD's entry level stuff is very inferior to Intel's equivalent. Opteron stuff, yes sir, I'll rock 'em!

Most definitely! I barely ever see an Intel laptop at work with a bad motherboard. If it is Intel it's an older nVidia one. Just yesterday I diagnosed bad motherboard on a Toshiba that was still under the original 1 year warranty! Yeah, AMD is that bad, and they still haven't fixed their crap.

^ honestly Sun/oracle SPARC could kick intel or AMDs ass anyday.

Re: Goontrons main (AMD) rig V3

The CPUs themselves are rarely the problem. The real problem is that, when the manufacturer goes cheap on the CPU, they naturally cheap out elsewhere too, including on the motherboard.

What I really hate is the E series APUs. I have an ASUS laptop with an E-350 APU right next to me now which I am fixing for a customer. I can't believe anyone would put up with a PC this sluggish. Then again, the Intel Bay Trail based Celerons (N2806 for instance) aren't much better.

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

you obviously never had any HP NC62xx series laptops then.
the only fix is a reflow, a custom heatsink and losing the wifi.

Let me guess, they're the ones that BSOD at stock clocks without a cooling mat. (Even though that's not normal to have a crash, even at 90 C, when not overclocking)
