    *bump

    (...the lurker steps forth)

    Hi there!

Got a busted laptop still running WinXP in front of the treadmill, the wife's laptop on Win7, my desktop on Win8.1 (with an XP bootable partition too), and phone on Win8.1

I made the upgrade jump with my desktop to Win8 back when it was silly cheap. There was all sorts of silliness at the time about loosing your XP installation with the upgrade, but turned out not to be the case for me. I really don't mind it too bad, except for a silly memory leak that bloats my committed memory until it crashes (may be bad USB wifi driver or something....).

Windows 8 phone was my first smartphone, so I am a little biased ; but it isn't too bad either, except I have to restart my phone pretty much every time I want to use my camera. Otherwise it does what I need fairly painlessly.

Oh, hey guy back there who couldn't get Win7 to run their old software at work (can't find post now): try the 32-bit version instead. Worked for me anyway.

Desktop: Win7 pro on SSD, Kali Linux on CF card, Ubuntu 14.04 on CF card, Win XP Black Edition on CF card. Using Addonics SATA digi drive to force all removable media into a fixed drive. Turn off SSD in bios.

Laptop: Win 7 pro on one HDD. Kali Linux on the other HDD.

        HTC phone with Kali Linux.

I chose Windows 8/8.1, as it's the newest that I'm using. I have 8 on my work desktop, 8.1 on my work laptop, and 7 on my home desktop. I'll probably stick with Win7 on my home PC for a while... at least until 10 is RTM. But at work, we're deploying 8 on all new computers.
          Ludicrous gibs!

OMG...I bought a copy of Win8/8.1...someone please make sure I'm still alive... and if so...

Well, unfortunately, it came with this tablet computer. I wonder how horrible it runs on the supposed target of win8.1 - no mouse, no keyboard...

I guess the main intent of this computer was to run Linux but need to figure out how to install it on this machine.

We'll see. Getting past UEFI32 without install media (have to make my own boot media), and possibly secure boot will be the challenge. As I don't have any other UEFI machines set up, figuring this all out will be the first challenge. At least I do have an EFI machine to base some knowledge from, but they aren't compatible (ia64 EFI vs i386 UEFI).

Supposedly I have two other machines that support UEFI, but I copped out and used MBR boot on them... Ahh MBR ... so much simpler...

I selected other because i run the windows 10 technical preview on my main PC, and all my servers run Server 2008 R2.

i hope you know win10 is soo spyware'd that it even has a keylogger.

but you know this, because you read the license agreement - right!

Main PC runs Windows 7,same for the Secondary PC (Pentium 4 1.8A @ 2.40GHz).

I like running Winodws 7 on anything that has AGP and is newer than SDR PGA370 boards. (by that I mean VIA Apollo Pro 266 based dual CPU boards and most DDR Skt462 boards to present)

PS : Anyone who wants to do this - avoid Intel 845-848P/865G/GV chipsets. If you want a old Intel platform (Socket 478 and early LGA775 boards) go for either VIA P4M800,I865PE or i875P.

These three are the only that run at decent speed. Anything other than that (except SiS chipsets, those run fast too)has poor performance for P4 boards.

I'm about at wit's end building a i386-EFI Linux kernel. Arrrgh.
Every single kernel I built ends up in a no-boot, doesn't even get to the first printk.
Redhat seems to have been able to build a kernel that actually works. Just don't know how they did it... grr.
