    RAM & Gravity

    Hello Everyone,

Just moments ago as I was scrambling to carry a Celeron 2Ghz CPU and a Heatsink in the other hand, I tried to add another piece of RAM into my left hand and the worst happened, The piece of RAM fell from the table top, onto the chair, bounced off the chair and hit the tile floor

One of the top corners of my RAM chip is chipped and I can see a small section of the PCB layer has seperated.... this is on a very edge of the RAM module.

I filed (very lightly) away the corner.... it isn't noticeable. It boots in my motherboard still ..... phew.
But I am worried that the RAM chip may one day short out and damage my mainboard or similar. Is there a possibility that this could happen??

    Thanks.

What about a small dab of epoxy to fill in the missing chunk?

You mean one of the actual IC's is chipped or just the green part of the stick is chipped? If you don't see any broken traces, who cares?

The chipped part is on the edge of the green bit. The IC's look fine. There aren't any traces on the very edge of the RAM module either.
The brand of the RAM is PNY technologies. I haven't heard of this company before....
I think it was classed as a generic one when I bought it and it cost $60AUD.... I bought a Kingston ValueRAM at the same time too for $70AUD.

I have no idea about the warranty either but the packaging looks great with the plastic box and graphical designs.

I bought it about 1 month ago.... and today it suffered an accident.... one that I regret too!.

Ideally not a good thing to happen but it does
provided the tracks weren't damaged it will probably be fine.
(you mention something about the track above, I suspect you mean it slightly bent cause the corner expanded on impact with the floor)

If you are really worried run it in an old system (it works in of course)
          for awhile

Think it will be fine thought if only the tip of the corner of the pcb was smashed a bit and it works.

          Wiki on the company here

Dont know how there ram stacks up in the scheme of things....
Maybe a cut above the generic ????

Thats the word and description i'm looking for ..... "expanded". Yes you are definitely correct, the corner has expanded when it impacted the floor.
It hasn't affected any traces since it's on the very edge. It is currently running in my Celeron 2Ghz PC which runs on a Gigabyte GA-8SG800 motherboard.
So far after running the PC for 2 hours and playing music and windows media visualisations.... all seems fine for now.

I'll post some pics later today.

Here are some pictures of the damage. Looking at the images and the real thing, the damage is unnoticeable..... probably because I filed away some parts of the expansion. But the layers are still intact though.

its hard to see any damage (I know you said you filed it slightly)

PCB material are fairly tough so yeah no sweat me thinks

                    Damn, it's all f*cked up!
Look at all the carnage....I suggest you better send it to me.
