    Dell VRM confusion...

I have an older Dell Poweredge 1400/1400SC system with a P3 800Mhz. I want to add a second CPU, but I need the VRM module as well. Problem is, I can't figure out which one I need.

The one that is in there now is part number 05S1622A, while the one that supposedly is the proper one is 05S2020A-4. When I search for the 05S1622A on ebay, the ones I find are for Optiplex GX150 and have slightly different layout. What gives? I know this machine is all original, so nobody messed with the VRM. The 05S2020A-4 Looks identical to the one I have now, but it is a different part number

Here is the one I have:

When I search that part number, the ones I get have an extra cap or two on the right side, and a different layout, like this:

As long as the VRM is the 40 pin variety, and is at least VRM 8.4 compliant, it'll work.. I think every spare VRM i have is coppermine compatible.. I mean the 40 pin VRM connector is a standard pinout, so even if your new VRM isn't 8.4, you'll just get a no POST condition..

Have you looked at the back of the module? I had forgotten that the 40 pin VRM's came in both 5Vin and 12Vin varieties, as well as "universal" models that can have either voltage for Vin..

I've taken a look at my spare VRM collection, two of them appear to be identical to the first picture, being Delta VRM's, and they're marked as 5V/12V compatible.. Then i've got a VXI and an older looking one with an IBM FRU number on it.. These last two i'm not so sure that they're universal, but the VXI at least appears to be 8.4 compliant..

I think the one that's currently installed is 5V only. I'll have to check it to be sure.
