Getting on the internet with windows XP

Yes, it's been so long since I used XP Pro that I have forgotten how to do this.
I also managed to get the board up and running again (but I will not turn it off yet) and now it's time to update since I don't even have SP2.
    Now he problem.

    Problem 1:
The internal network adapter is just called "1394 Net adapter" and even configuring for DHCP like I usually do results in nothing.
The network is invisible, other systems can't see me and I can't use the internet even though the system and the net status light tells me that I am connected to the router. I still have a few other device drivers to install (one being an SM Bus controller) but they mostly invlove external devices and sound.

    Problem 2:
I have alot of drives. I want to order them. How on earth do I change their drive letters?

Sounds like you don't have the right network drivers....
1394 Network Driver, is a generic XP listing for a firewire port network.
I guess you have a firewire/IEEE 1394 port on the motherboard?

If XP Pro isn't sp1.1 minimum. expect all sorts of errors. sp.2 contains some TCP-IP changes.
After you get the ethernet port recognized with the correct driver...run the silly Windows Networking Wizard and select LAN settings.

As for arranging your drives...log in as an Administrator....
Open control panel and select Administrative Tools.
    There, select Disk Manager.
Now you can change the drive letters at will.

Yeah thats what I though 1394 Firewire
(easy enough to get thrown if you dont use firewire and think its an ethernet adapter thought)

What type of Ethernet adapter are you using? (onboard, pci card)
      (realtek etc)

check.... control panel>system>(system properties)Hardware>device manager and see if there are ! exclamation marks beside any type of network adapters.

If so you will then need to search out the right driver and install
(being in mind what WNG has said too)

WNG seems to know more about networking issues with the XP service packs then I thought.

Yep, it's an onboard network adapter. Without network I don't know how to install the service packs. I feel like such a windows n00b after a year of using linux.

        Edit: BLAST!
The stupid wind knocked the power out for around 30 seconds and when the lights came on the system was off. As I sadly expected, the system won't POST again!

          |-P

Might try a web search for a XP service pack 2 download.
Even without running IE, try using Linux browser to grab it from Windows Update site.

            Good one.
I can just boot off the live cd and since the internet works fine off the cd then I can just download th pack, save it to a physical drive and reboot and do the rest in windows.

I have a WinXP box where the on-board network port quit working. I already had a PCI network card installed, so I just switched to that one. I never tried it with Linux, I just assumed that the on-board port was fried, and moved on.

                Oh, it's a Gigabyte P4 Titan 8PE667 MoBo with Intel 845PE chipset.

Well the network adapter is fine. A live boot off the ubuntu cd allowed me to surf the net on it.
I installed SP2 and redid the network wizard. Once again I am not on a network and I can't surf the net. It looks lik I need the driver for the controller but I don't know where exactly to find it. All I have left to install for the motherboard is drivers for the audio and I forget what else but they are incredibly bloated and besides cd's I have no other way to transfer the files.
I need more zip drives in my machines!.

Re: Getting on the internet with windows XP

If this is an onboard ethernet adapter, you should find the drivers at the motherboard's support site.
If you open the Device Manager, see if the network adapter entry has a "?" or "!" next to it. This means no matching driver, or conflict with another HW item.

If it's fine and lists the adapter as working properly, then your problem is the network connection set up. Open Network Connections and highlight the adapter...
Make sure TCP-IP settings are DHCP, if you're using that from your router.

Can you attach a flash card reader to your USB?
Also, can your ubuntu liveCD access the windows (NTFS) HDD? Just download the files to a folder on the drive(s).

Re: Getting on the internet with windows XP

Sounds like you need to install a driver in Windows for it to work! Only question now is what network chipset you have. The easiest way to find that out is to find out your motherboard model, that way you can just go onto the motherboard manufacturers website and grab drivers from there or even get more recent ones directly from the network chipsets website. There are a few things that i thought of right now:

                      * You can most likely use a hardware detection program to find out what your network controller is....my personal choice is HwInfo. You can make a bootable floppy to run the program or you can download Hiren's BootCD which includes that program (along with a bunch of other very useful DOS applications).

                      * You can press the 'Pause' button on your keyboard at the start of bootup. In all cases that I have looked at, the motherboard's model is listed just before the hard drive detection.

                      * You can download a network driver pack, what I am thinking about is Bâshrat the Sneaky's DriverPacks available at http://www.driverpacks.net/

The LAN DriverPack contains drivers for a very large range of LAN controllers. I am nearly 100% sure that this pack will contain the drivers that you need.

                      Hope that helps!

Re: Getting on the internet with windows XP

Now I am cooking with gas!
I had to setup one of my spare wireless usb adapters and the connect wirelessly. Oddly, the access point less than a metre from me had a vey low signal so I had to start waving the adapter around the room until I could get a reasonable signal from an unsecured network across the street. I then downloaded the last of the utilities and packs and promptly installed them.
I am now using the internal network adapter and so far no problems.
Now I have to cope with other problems.

the live updater for the board is constantly complaining about programs not running (I better reinstall it)

The system is DOG slow. I mentioned before that my fathers system was slow but right now I am taking the cake. The screensaver has crashed several times mouse movement and window movement has gone jittery and sometimes it takes forever for a simple task to be done.

While I was at the garage sales today I spent all my money on a mac II and completely forgot about my need for two speakers and a volume control (or the proper speakers for my harmon kardon system). I have no sound .

I'm also going to have to bite the bullet again and shut the system down again. I found a dvd drive to replace the unrelaible cd-rw drive I currently have installed.

Oh yeah, I also have a nasty sunburn.

                            Pentium, your machine is ailing.

The note above for DriverPacks is a good one. It is a VERY comprehensive package and should work for you.

If not, use Device Manager to examine the Hardware ID details of the offending device. You can reference it to www.pcidatabase.com and see who makes it, and what model it is. Sometimes, Windows Update (hardware) will have the right driver.

My advice is to build an XP/SP2 installation CD by slipstreaming SP2 into the C:\I386 directory.

Copy the I386 and subdirectories from CD to C:\I386
Copy the SP2 installation file to C:\TEMP
                            From C:\TEMP, run update -s:\

This will slipstream SP2 into the I386 directory. Note the updater points to C:\, because it expects root to be the parent of the \I386 directory. This is a snippet of working code that I use for my automated SP2 slipstream/install on client machines.

I have the slipstreamed file structure saved in a ZIP file with full path information. I unzip to C:\ which creates C:\I386 and subs. I then install from C:\I386\Winnt.exe under DOS, so the installed system knows where it was installed from. This is a bit more work than installing directly from the CD, but it works very well for me. I convert from FAT32 to NTFS during the installation process.

bgavin; you can make the slipstreamed disc botable too, just takes a little bit more work

                              http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...slipstream.asp

And then when the install is done you can change the "sourcepath" in the registry, so it will look in C:\I386 for the windows install files

                              HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

Change "SourcePath" to where the I386 folder resides (Do not point to the folder itself, i.e. it should be C:\ if the I386 folder is in C:\I386

And since this is a slipstreamed install you should also change "ServicePackSourcePath". But only do that if it is pointing to the CD drive, if it is pointing to c:\windows something leave it be

                              HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

This is the last thing you need to change, this one should point to the I386 folder, unlike the previous one... "SourcePath" so change that to C:\I386
"The one who says it cannot be done should never interrupt the one who is doing it."

I have the right drivers installed now.
The only things to clean up now are drivers for my scanner, dazzle video input and usb to serial for my joysticks.

The net driver problem applied to this system. all other systems that were installed using the same cd never had a network problem (Almost every system I own has a 3Com NIC).

The system is still dog slow.

EDIT: I just remembered that I am running with 256 megs ram. The will definately slow things down.

The Windows XP drivers for 3Com cards are marginal.
Download the v5.4 drivers from the 3Com site. They work much better.

Slipstreaming the SP2 update into an I386 directory has nothing to do with net drivers. It simply provides a pre-configured SP2 installation, in the event you do not have one already.
