Best memory card for Canon A630?

I got my A630, and it's awesome But I only have a 2GB card with it. How big of a card can I use, and how fast does it need to be? I can't find any reference to it in the manuals.

I'm aiming for 8GB, but I don't know too much about memory cards, so whether I need SD, MMC, SDHC, 45X, 150X, etc, I don't know The card I have now is just plain SD, don't know what speed.

With my old camera 32MB was enough, but now that I can take movies in better quality then my 8mm camcorder, I need some more space dammit

But damn, I love this camera. At first I didn't think I'd need a flip-out display, but now I couldn't go without it. Oh and thanks Willawake

So it does support SDHC, cool... Looks like I would also want what they call a "class 6" card, for better speed. Problem is, the Kingston card I want is half the cost of the whole camera

i dont think the camera needs much speed. it will benefit transfer to computer if a high speed reader is used though. although i doubt many readers max out a 133x

mikey bought Transcend 8GB SHDC for $54.99

Does the Trancend work smoothly w/ movies without dropping frames and such?

I don't have a SDHC reader anyway, so would be using the camera to transfer photos to PC. I just don't wanna end up getting a card that's too slow, since the files can be pretty big and I don't wanna sit there all day

not sure......i tried a movie that was about 2 minutes long. i didn't notice any playback problems.

i bought a reader, but it sucks. i don't think its working. i do my transfers by the camera. i'd have to do some tests on how fast it is.

Re: Best memory card for Canon A630?

Hmm..I would say get a reasonable quality card at least. I have had huge issues with a Nikon D70 because of the memory card. It was a standard Kingston card that was causing issues, I am not sure what exactly caused the problem. All I know is that when using that card with the camera, the camera would sometimes hang at startup. As the card got more full, these hangs became more and more common. Ever since moving to a reasonable memory card I have had zero problems with the camera or the card.

On a side note, consider purchasing a memory card based on SLC technology rather than the MLC technology. SLC may be an older technology and more expensive, however it is much much faster and the memory card will last longer to boot! Just about all of the 'fast' cards out there are based on the SLC technology (although last time I checked there were some standard cards that used that technology). Needless to say I made sure that the second card that I purchased used the SLC technology.
