    Netlimiter

    http://www.netlimiter.com/

this is a very nice piece of software which is used to limit the transfer rate for each program which is using the internet by specifying an upload or download limit. Why is that useful? well some programs tend to swamp the internet connection.

In this case i am downloading fedora isos with Opera so i set a download limit and browse the net comfortably while my download is taking place. Actually i have found that opera is the no.1 download client and thats all i use it for. You can even stop the download and close opera and then happily resume again another day.

Also netlimiter is useful to see what is going on and you can catch some spyware or even be suprised how much traffic one program is making. Some people were suprised to see that skype making a lot of traffic when idle. Why is that? well skype is a p2p application and can use your computer on occasion to allow people behind very restrictive firewalls to talk to each other........with netlimiter you can limit the skype traffic when you are not making calls if you wanted to stop that practice...

you might ask why does the screen capture show a speed of 65351 when I have limited opera to 60000? well actually the transfer rate seems to bounce around in the software so i think it is averaging 60000.

you can also change the units of the transfer speed (now its in KB) and also do stuff like see the applications with their full names.

This software is proving very useful to me. Highly recommended.

    Re: Netlimiter

Well it`s powerfull, i agree, but latency...... you can`t play FPS games like CSS and Scype etc. Ok, last time i have had it installed, it was my old Athlon XP box, duno how it works on dualcore and faster proc`s. Best thing would be, if there would be a server, wich could deliver real time information abouth other users traffic and mannage all the trafic on the client´S directly to not clog the dsl line.

      Re: Netlimiter

actually the skype forums show a lot of skype users use this prog.

i agree it would be great to have a server or perhaps even an advanced router doing this.

still its a nice easy solution and great cos i can now browse and download at the same time.

Yep, as mentioned above, i used it only on my Athlon xp rig (2000MHZ) and W2k. Iam realy shure, that it is a CPU hungry thing if Scype and CSS are running simultanely (yep, Scype alone is a burden to any CPU alone).
Furthermore i have tested this for abouth one or two years, duno if it has been improved in the meantime.

              Re: Netlimiter

Sounds good, I already have firewalls which I even paid for lol, I wonder if the lite version would be a good choice for limiting other users on my network, does it have a stealth mode? I'd really like to install it without them knowing, otherwise they'd just uninstall it.

doesnt seem to have a stealth option. really you want to look into installing a firewall box between the switch and the router. there is probably some free linux based one which has that feature. i know it is possible to do this with the cisco router$. keywords would be : traffic shaping, bandwidth management

                  Re: Netlimiter

netlimiter seems to have a problem with local gigabit lan connections (via workgroup to another xp pc or also to a samba share) locks up explorer etc. not very good at all. i still need the limiting function for big downloads so if anybody has a better solution then please advise.

                    Re: Netlimiter

I prefer a good external firewall to handle stuff like traffic shaping

I use IPCOP myself, I however do not use it's traffic shaping abilities, I just config my applications properly and all is well... (for my usage cenarios)

                      Re: Netlimiter

I have configured the QOS feature in my Linksys wrt54g running linux based dd-wrt v24.
I can`t complain abouth it, it is working w/o any problems. But shure, the download behaivior is with DSl always a problem, as it is only indirect controlable via the ACK packets.
When the router is queuing up the incomming packets, then they are already received....

Any way, i can easily playng CSS, Scyping etc. and downloading stuff without the ping penalty.

Upstreamcontroling is very accurate, i even could limited the bandwidht per MAC or port or set the prioity.
