Good Keyboard

I'm looking for a good keyboard since I'm spending more and more time in front of my computer.
I do a lot of typing on a daily basis, and I'm doing more gaming now too so the keyboard needs to be able to keep up with that.

At this moment I'm using a combo of Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 800 and Microsoft Wireless Mouse 1000. the mouse is ok but unless it's really close to the USB reciever it doesn't work so well. The keyboard is mediocre at best.

I have never had a nice mechanical keyboard and I hear that not only do they take some time to get used to but also are very awesome after that

I'd prefer backlighting but that's not all that important even though I think an expensive keyboard should have backlighting...

I've given up thinking that I can get a good mechanical WIRELESS keyboard so I will just have to get a USB extension cable and use a WIRED keyboard

I like MSI and it has the Cherry MX Red mechanical switches which I've read don't have to press very hard, which I like. And it looks good Any thouoghts on that keyboard?

I don't know much about mice. I would prefer Wireless because the cable is annoying but I don't know if that will be possible to get a good mouse that is also good for gaming and is wireless at the same time. Any suggestions for mouse??

I just bought the Logitech MK260 for my new build for $25. I don't see it anymore but the MK270 is available. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16823126332 .I've been using an S 510 keyboard mouse combo for years and it's still going strong.

I like Logitech stuff... I just don't see any Mechanical keyboards from them with the features I was looking at.

it has the Cherry MX Red mechanical switches which I've read don't have to press very hard, which I like.

You might not like them for typing - they're better for gaming because they have a linear activation force (no tactile feedback).

I have a super-cheap "Inland" mouse from Newegg. It works fine for me.


For your usage, I would recommend a keyboard with Cherry MX "Brown" switches (such as the "soft clicky" Das Keyboards and many other "quiet" mechanical keyboards).

Blue switches are nice for typing, as they have the best tactility. However, the hysteresis can be annoying when playing games because you have to almost fully release the key before pressing it again. They also make a LOT of noise.

Brown switches are slightly less tactile, but are very quiet and have lower hysteresis. They are acceptable for gaming and good for typing.

Black and red switches are very similar. They are both linear (i.e. no tactility). They are terrible for typing because it is hard to tell when you have depressed the key sufficiently. However, they have virtually no hysteresis, making them much better for gaming due to easy multi-tapping. The only difference between the two is that the red has a lighter spring, and therefore is easier to press.

Fun fact: Cherry MX black switches are used in the "bump bars" at McDonald's (the keypads with the buttons that we use to keep track of the orders).

I use a cheap $30 Gigabyte GK-K6800 keyboard and a $20 Logitech mouse. They suffice for FSX and PSU reviews.

Went to a computer shop and told the seller... look, I'll definitely buy one, even if it's a $200 keyboard, just take all of them down and let me press the keys and get a feeling of how they work.
Out of about 10 keyboards, this particular Microsoft one felt the best.

I can't buy a keyboard just because it has cherry pink buttons or whatever, it can have platinum buttons but an "ergonomic design" would kill it for me.

The cheap Zalman wired mice have cords that are very flexible, making them less annoying than most cords.

Lots of good mechanical keyboards cost way less than that $120 MSI, and even MonoPrice is selling them. Alps seems to be as good as Cherry, and the old heavy NMBs, like the Compaqs, feel very different from newer keyboards that use the same flexible circuit board key matrix (even the IBM Model M used that), including the Microsoft Natural. Basically anything with an AT instead of PS/2 connector is good. Focus also makes good keyboards.

How much are you wanting to spend?


I know of a few new gaming keyboards that have the old school box look to them. As far as a gaming mouse that Asus you linked isn't to bad.

Look into Razer, Steel Series, Logitech, Roccat, Corsair brands. They all have wireless mice available, and will probably get the job done. I really like the shape and feel of steelseries products. I currently use a Kana and a Xai and they are both great.

Did you look into the g700 more? Thats honestly the best bang for your buck mouse out.

If I dislike the G700 I'm out $80 I'll probably get it though...

I found this keyboard. It would be nice not to have the numpad so I could stick the mouse on the keyboard tray of my desk... But I feel like I'd miss the numpad after a while
