    Hard drives from pvr's?

Just want to know a bit about these.

I have one 500gb western digital green "WD5000AADS-56S9B1" running windows and a "ST3500312CS Seagate Pipeline HD 500GB" for back up stuff.

These was taken from a sky HD box and a Virgin hd box.

Are these just normal hard drives?

They cost me a total of £15 for both. And i pick up another Sky HD box tomorrow with the WD Caviar green 500gb inside for £1.20.

Is it fine to run windows on them or are they slower and meant for video recording only?

edit: Wrote in the wrong tab, sorry.

Oh hell, as long as I posted... might as well say something on topic.

They should be normal drives. Normally I don't bother even looking for something like this, mainly because most boxes around here should be password protected, so that data won't be accessible and I'm not sure how hard it is for drives to be unlocked.

        Re: Hard drives from pvr's?

        Everything I search is 7200rpm?

The wd has 32mb cach and the seagate has 8mb cache.

I used a 160gb hdd out of an old sky+ box a couple of years ago to install windows onto, the pc was slow as hell? Thats what made me write this thread.

My Pc at the moment is a little slow, I could sworn it was faster than this at one point. I have re-installed windows but it just doesnt seem as fast as it used to be?

Can a crappy psu cause it? Because my last psu went pop. Also I replaced a cap on my mobo with one that has higher uf.

Here are both on hd tune.

So the WD should not make my computer slow down?

It can but I don't think it would be much the green drives "park" themselves

              http://www.instantfundas.com/2011/12...tal-green.html

Like the article says dont' bother running them in linux or in a raid I made the mistake in both cases

                Thanks for the link.

Possible to turn the park feature off?

Picked up My sky HD box, Opened it up expecting a 500gb caviar green like the last one but it was only 300gb Caviar SE

                Still not bad for £1.20

no you can't turn the feature off I wish I could I wouldn't have a stack of 500gb green drives sitting here at my office.

Drives from PVR's are fine for use in systems.

They will be fine for Linux or Raids. These drives if anything are normally equal to or better than retails drives because of the use they are expedicted to receive. Normally the drives in a PVR are much better quaility than say a drive from a external USB enclosier for example.

With the discussion about water pumps failing when cars sit for a while, I wonder what people have seen with hard drives. Do people see hard drives failing after being sat on the shelf for a long time unpowered versus a hard drive that's at least powered up at least once in a while, say, weekly?

Wonder if it's worth spinning up the spare spinners once in a while to keep the bearings lubricated?

Wonder how I should best keep my cold spares for my RAID "fresh" for eventual failures of the working drives. Was thinking about keeping a hot spare but that's another...

I've gotten into the habit of Looking at peoples Mechanical Hard drives with a Ubuntu thumb drive to boot their system.
I understand the raw values are not really uniform between manufacturers, but I have noticed that high seek and read error raw values at the very least correlate to a drive that is going to have sub par access time, and extremely slow OS booting.
The odd thing is I've often seen very high seek and read error rates on drives with fairly low on time.

Does anybody have any other takes on evaluating smart data? I've used Crystal Disk Info, It seems to present...

**Need Help Unlocking BIOS and Hard Drive on Dell Precision 5820 Tower**
                          by federalhouse
                          Hi everyone,

I'm in need of assistance with a Dell Precision 5820 Tower. The BIOS is locked with "Dell Security Manager," preventing access to the HDD-1 hard drive.

                          **Background:**

I recently purchased this Dell Precision 5820 Tower from a recycler who salvages equipment from abandoned office spaces. The computer was left behind by its previous owner and was password locked. Given that it can run Windows 11, I saw this as an opportunity to upgrade my setup.

                          **What I've Tried So Far:**
