500 GB External drive - Not!

This was recently posted on a pc tech forum I frequent. In honor of the fake caps that are out there, I thought you guys would get a laugh out of this one.

Do NOT touch heatsinks when testing for voltages as they may be LIVE!

        Oops, sorry!

I know the story is a couple of years old, but I just came across it, so it's new to me. The two nuts added for weight are a hoot, lol. I wonder if lead fishing sinkers would be cheaper or not...

Reminds me of the Echo star PSU with half a PCB and dummy weights.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

Toshiba HDTW230XS3CA 3TB external drive died
                      by m710q_flash
I had been using this hard drive for a while, and it worked fine only going back and forth between 3 computers.

Plugged it into an older computer that happened to have a really loose USB port. Light flashed once and died, never to be powered up again. Not sure if it's relevant that the USB port was loose.

Anyway, now it doesn't power up at all, it's been sitting on my desk for years and figured what the heck, nothing to lose as I'm not going to pay someone to fix it, maybe I can learn something from it.

Removed the case, figured I would look for anything...

**Need Help Unlocking BIOS and Hard Drive on Dell Precision 5820 Tower**
                      by federalhouse
                      Hi everyone,

I'm in need of assistance with a Dell Precision 5820 Tower. The BIOS is locked with "Dell Security Manager," preventing access to the HDD-1 hard drive.

                      **Background:**

I recently purchased this Dell Precision 5820 Tower from a recycler who salvages equipment from abandoned office spaces. The computer was left behind by its previous owner and was password locked. Given that it can run Windows 11, I saw this as an opportunity to upgrade my setup.

                      **What I've Tried So Far:**

                      1. I accessed

So I've worked on dozens of HP and Dell laptops and have never encountered this before.
Steps taken in my usual process.
Reset security settings in the BIOS
Ensure existing HD comes up into the OS
Shut down the laptop and disconnected the main battery
Removed old M2 drive and replaced with a new 1tb Mushkin Temptest NVME drive. (I'm aware the bus is Sata III but the drive should still work at a slower speed right? Been my experience in other laptops)
Replace battery connector and close up the laptop
Insert my USB drive with my Windows 10 image I've...
