Re: Win Xp and Vista Support?

The windows updates will stop working, and I'll move on to Linux.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

Windows XP x64 will be supported until 7/14/2015 (Windows Server 2003 actually - but the updates can be used for XP x64), around a year longer than 32-bit XP. Hopefully by then, Microsoft will have released something new that's like XP, unlike Windows 7 and especially Windows 8, with the counterintuitive UI. I still use XP 32 bit mainly, but I'm planning to go to XP x64 one of these days.

They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

I'm already trying to move away from programs that are Windows exclusive. My current calendar/to do list runs fine after WINE and I just have to test my tax software (or just dual boot)

Once XP support is dropped, I will like likely move onto some linux variant like lubuntu (front runner for me). Opera and Chrome are my main two browsers and they run under linux.

I too am still a staunch XP user. I have 7 on one of my laptops for experimenting....but all my other system are XP64. Win8, that will be a ME/vista-ish disaster.

Hi. Nothing will actually 'happen', you'll carry on as normal. All this means is, say, like an antivirus program that no longer gets definitions updates. It will still function fine but will not have the 'updates' which allow it to recognize new threats. Similarly these OS's will not get new updates that address new issues if any.

XP is mature enough by now though to not need new fixes for the OS itself unless new hardware creates a problem and (hopefully) become increasingly ignored by the malware writing idiots. For new installs in future you still need the currently 110+ updates after SP3 (if you include the .NET stuff). There's going to be plenty more before 2014 to be sure, problem is Microsoft have NO intention of putting it all in a final Service Pack for XP's hold-outs. Hopefully some eager young buck will spend the hours making an unofficial final SP for his college project or something !

IMO there's nothing intrinsically wrong with Windows 7. After much research when it first appeared I adopted it on my office PC's right after SP1. Never had the slightest problem since. Win7 is based on Vista but its much slimmed down etc, I never had much of a problem with Vista either, it just needed a well hung PC .

One thing to keep in mind is that manufacturers of new hardware and aftermarket software companies may decide to stop supporting XP.

Eventually they will....but as with Win2k and OS's before it, on mainstream hardware there will always be code monkeys out there making sure XP still has drivers. XP killed off win2k fairly easily....but MS made XP too well, they're having a really hard time killing it off. Win7 took a dent out but couldn't do it, and win8 sure won't deliver a fatal blow to XP either.....

Theres only ONE program I wish worked with XP64, and that's Waterfox. Everything else I have and use runs great on XP!

How is XP64 compared to XP? Never used it other than briefly in the past. Hey - I used ME exclusively back in the day! He he. I don't know why people thought it was any different from 98se. Seemed the same to me, but with updated apps.

Nice... I didn't know that existed... I want to compare speed with Firefox on 32 bit XP on the HWACCEL test. Firefox layer acceleration in XP is not very good at all.

I get 89fps in a HWACCELL test in Windows XP 32 with Chromium Build 156697, all acceleration options force-enabled (Except for Direct2D acceleration which is not available at all in XP). With Firefox, I can't get more than like 15.

Windows XP 64 bit is a great operating system. Most of the issues with drivers and instability were 5+ years ago. I never really had any problems with it in the 2 years I ran it on my main rig (Feb 09' - Apr 11')
