    Various cooling mod's / tricks??

Trying to figure out if it is better to just replace the thermal pads or use a copper shim. I would assume that the copper shim is better but if you have to use a couple layers of thermal compound is that going to make the thermal pads the way to go?

Also, does anyone know a few really easy fan mods/ fan control programs? What should my fan be set at to make sure my GPU/CPU do not overheat?

What is the best mod for laptop RAM and laptop hard drives to keep them cool? Any ideas??

    Would really appreciate the help!!!!!!!!!!

(working mainly with the HP DVxxxx models and the Dell Studio 15xx / Inspiron 15xx model)

I don't understand how a copper shim can help unless it fills gaps to make the contact surfaces fit together better, something that lapping also does.

DDR2 and DDR3 memory chips are rated for 85C/185F, so no cooling is ever needed, unless they're overclocked or the modules were made from factory reject chips. If you can see the actual chip manufacturer's (Samsung, Micron, Hynix, etc.) part number on the chips, they're OK. It's house branded or unmarked chips you have to worry about because most module makers don't test their products in fancy machines but only with PCs. There's a good chance that desktop memory is overclocked, especially if the chips are covered with heatsinks, and some reviewers have removed heatsinks and found 1333 MHz chips in modules rated for 30-60% greater speed. One company that overclocks memory that way (among the 3 biggest sellers) tests only with PCs and says 2 errors per module is OK.

It's probably best to simply keep your CPU heatsinks clean (vacuum from the outside, but hold the fan still so it can't spin too fast and be damaged) and avoid using laptops on your laptop without a hard, flat surface underneath to prevent blocking the vent openings.

      That's exactly what it does.

Do you have any spec on the number of hours they're rated for at 85C? Besides, there's also the PCB and solder balls to worry about, not just the chip itself.

The problem is that some laptops have absolutely horrible thermal design, either there are not enough openings, making the fan ineffective, and/or the fan only kicks in at full speed when the thing is about to melt, then after it cools down a couple degrees, it slows back down.

I couldn't find anything in the data sheets relating maximum operating temperature to lifespan, only absolute maximum voltage to lifespan, and for the latter all they said was that prolonged operation would reduce chip life, but they didn't say by how much.

But does the bad cooling affect the RAM or its solder, unlike the CPU and video chip?

          Samsung R530 Bremen motherboard cooling
          by Ace Perception
          Hi,
I'm wondering if anybody out there has much knowledge of Samsung Bremen motherboards.
I've got a Samsung R530 which is about 10 years old, over the last 12 months it developed a worsening problem where when asked to do much work it would shut itself down. I had a good idea this was due to overheating which was confirmed by a temperature monitor programme which showed little balls of fire next to the various internal temperature readings. I could also prevent it shutting down if I placed a huge fan running at full speed in front of its air intake!
So I went in pursuit of...

          Your Video Card Cooling Mods
          by momaka
As the thread title suggests, this thread is about posting mods that you have done to your GPUs / video cards in order to improve their cooling. This could be anything, such as a simple modded VGA BIOS and/or heatsink replacement, to more intricate works like liquid cooling systems, special voltage mods, and etc.

The only reason I decided to make this into a separate thread rather than continue posting in the Ghetto Mod thread is that here, you can post *any* GPU cooler mods and not just necessarily “ghetto” ones. Also, this way, it should be easier to find the mods in...

          Liquid cooling?
          by Hondaman
I hope my computer does not randomly reboot while typing this. My main system is the AsRock 970A-G/3.1 motherboard with the AMD 8150 chip. I am experiencing FREQUENT and RANDOM reboots once the system is used for a couple of hours (sometimes it reboots before I even get to the Win7/Linux Mint dual-boot screen). The problem MIGHT be the DRAM controller chip (I recently upgraded to the maximum 64 GB RAM). It also might be the VRM chips. I am using a typical aftermarket CPU cooler, which does NOT blow air DOWN onto the VRM heat sink.

(After previous generation hardware [Gigabyte] didn't...

          Sell or Shim Solar panels?
          by eccerr0r
Well, due to my grid tie inverter not accepting high voltages, and the fact that the lions in my solar panels are 36V (72-cell) I think I need to stick with 72-cell.

However I have a few smaller panels that are 36, 32, and two 30-cell. The 36 and 32 together run at 75% efficiency (and subtract more with additional inefficiencies) when running in parallel with the 72-cell panels. The kicker is that the two 30s... generate 0% power when connected in parallel(!)

So now what to do with these small panels?

          I could sell them...

          Or I could shim them....

Palit RTX 2080 Super Jetstream Mats/Mods help
          by Maxim Bojko
          Hello,

I have a RTX 2080 that is broken, but interesting thing is that the card works how it should work, but when playing the card crashes, black screen fans go to 100% and nothing happens anymore. I changed thermal paste because I thought it was overheating, but no. So I checked with gpu z and here is what I had.

After a while a dude I got friends with told me to underclock the gpu via msi afterburner. First to underclock the core speed by 200 then open the chart for the mhz and voltage and said that I should change the mhz at 0,9v to 1900mhz. Since then I doesn't crash...
