Asus K8V-MX fans turn on for 2 second, no post.

    Hello there.

I found this motherboard when I was cleaning up my closet full of useless computer parts. It has AMD Sempron 64 3000+ processor.
I deciced to build a computer from it for net surfing and other stuff like that and sell it for cheap.

However, upon testing the mobo, the fans turn on for 2 seconds and then shuts down. No post, no picture. The SB_POWER led stays lit all the time. If I short the power switch pins again, nothing happens.
I have to plug off the psu from wall to make it "turn on" again.
It does the same symptom even without RAM. I tested with another PSU. Reseted the bios.
No bad caps or anything visible, capacitors are from Panasonic and Sanyo.
Oh, and it once stayed on, but I didn't have any monitor nearby so I don't know if it POSTed or not... Atleast the CPU got warm.

Any clues what to do next?

    Try another CPU first.

Having to unplug the PSU from the wall is a sign its protection circuit kicked in. If you are sure the 2nd PSU is good/working right, something is probably creating a short circuit.

Unplug everything from the PSU except the bare minimum, leaving motherboard 20 or 24 pin connector and CPU 12V connector plugged in. Remove video card if present, memory, all cards. Unplug the case power switch in case it is faulty and short the power-on pins on the motherboard together with something conductive (screwdriver tip, etc).

If it stays on, either the switch or something you unplugged was faulty. Add back parts one at a time and retest. If it doesn't stay on, remove the board from the case, perhaps it was shorting out against a standoff or something, then repeat the above tests.

If there is any question whether these PSU are viable, be sure to try another PSU too. You might leave them both disconnected from EVERYTHING and short together PS-On pin (green wire) to ground (black wire) and see if they stay on without a load, although rarely a PSU will need a load to stay running but those are usually server grade PSU not common PC PSU. If they stay on you might measure the power rail voltages with a multimeter to see if they're within the right ranges.

If it stays on with CPU 12v disconnected there's a problem in the CPU power section.
        sig files are for morons

Well, seems like it was the PSU anyway. I tested it with two Fortrons pulled from working machines. Both did the same symptom.

Today I tested it with third PSU, ultra-crap Allied AL-A300ATX and it boots. Oh well...

          Thanks for your help.
