    RAM for Mac Pro

    So I got a 2006 Mac Pro running OS X 10.6, with a 20" Apple Cinema Display.
I have a question: I noticed it uses "FB-DIMMS" I'm assuming that means they are Fully Bufferred ECC... can I use completely normal DDR2? Because it's got 2 empty slots and I've got 2 1GB sticks of DDR2 800 Wintec AMPO RAM with heatsinks that I want to put in... can I do that? Will the Mac Pro take normal PC RAM?
Because I really rather not buy more RAM for it!
    Thanks!

PS: If I DO need to buy some RAM, would any/either of the following work?

One more thing: would these work in it? http://www.ebay.com/itm/MATCHED-PAIR...item2ebed5ac5c

FB-DIMMS are Fully Buffered ECC. So no you can not use normal DDR2. Also the memory gets very hot in those machines that is why apple uses the massive heatspeaders they do on the memory. I do not think a normal heatspreader would keep the memory cool enough but it may, just dont have a cow when you fry the ram if you didn't use the proper heatspreader. The memory also has to be installed in pairs as well if I remember right.

If you want stuff with the heat spreaders the size of an apple, then this looks good. Otherwise, you could see if you can get a fan in there.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

          Re: RAM for Mac Pro

I offered the top link in the top post $100.00. If he doesn't take that offer I'll look at the others.

c_hegge, as far as cooling the RAM, here's how it works:
Front intake vent-->Front CPU fan-->CPU heatsinks-->RAM-->Rear exhaust fan-->Rear exhaust vent
          No shortage of RAM cooling

Unfortunately you are right My normal DDR2 RAM won't even fit, lol
