I use MSE on my two windows installs... It had less impact than avast, which CRIPPLED my HDD speeds.

I'd still linux it... no AV required.

I was thinking that too, but with Linux the touchscreen doesn't work so it's a useless brick IMO.

About the thing with Download.com, it's not a normal Download.com installer - it doesn't package that shit. I think Avast! has made special arrangements not to use that malware-laden BS.

Not to thread-hijack, buy I just finished setting-up another C600 like my school laptop. It's for my uncle. Unfortunately, my last stick of 256 MB SDRAM SODIMM is dead for some reason so I had to pull one from my school laptop. Otherwise that computer would have had only 256 MB of RAM, which is a bit too low these days, even for light surfing. Currently, both my school laptop and my uncle's laptop have 384 MB of RAM now. Kind of low, but a lot more tolerable than 256 MB. Need to find me some 256 MB SDRAM SODIMM modules. I'll create a thread for that later...

So anyways, all I meant to say with that above is that both of these laptops are still pretty decent machines for light web surfing. With a more powerful CPU, yours is probably even better.

Holy shit, this thing is FAST! .... and it actually works, too! I can't tell you how many times I've had Adobe Reader either crash or not open a document. It also wouldn't open capacitor data sheets half the time because it always says it's missing some bullshit Japanese/Korean/Chinese font (and even after downloading that, it still wouldn't work). Not to mention that anything after version 6 is a BIG resource hog, and anything prior to that version is useless and incompatible. I had Adobe Reader 8 first, then switched to 10 after some issues. 10 crashed way too often and used too many resources so I decided to try version 5. 5 was okay in terms of stability and resource but was incompatible and wouldn't display lot's of newer documents properly, so I switched back to 8. But all in all, Adobe Reader is still a major piece of turd. I really need to purge that crap from all of my computers now.

I kind of did know there are alternatives out there but I was never bothered to try them, especially after trying Foxit (Fucks-it??) Reader, which seemed even worse than Adobe Reader. That made me lose hope a bit.

I definitely owe you big time for showing me this.

I have Avast on one computer. It does have some impact on the HDD speeds but it's still much better than everything else I've tried. Not sure if it's better than MSE, though. One thing I definitely dislike about Avast is that, at least in version 6, inserting a CD or DVD freezes the computer pretty much until Avast finishes scanning the CD/DVD. *Very anoying* . And of course just like any other AV, if you open a folder with many .exe files, everything becomes considerably slower for a bit.

That was my only complaint with Avast. For me, MSE froze the computer while scanning any folder with more than a few files in it. I didn't have any problem with the hard drive performance dropping, and I was using a drive that was so slow that enabling DMA only caused a slight performance increase.

^ good question there. It's a bit weird to be honest. I left it idle for a long while with that HDD light continually flashing... come back a little later and it stops flashing and is normal again... and has been ever since. It's like doing some indexing in the background? (which stops once completed)

Got something new. Recently I got trouble with receiving emails and syncing OneNote. Nothing else. I still can stream 24x7, VOIP, have full speed internet, but in the world cannot receive any emails nor sync OneNote. Hooked up my computer directly to the modem (which is in bridge mode) and have the same problems! Put all the network shit back together, start my VPN provider app, choose the closed VPN server to me and all the problems are gone! Is...

Hi! I'm back again... so I solved my previous issue but now it's back with a vengeance...

First, history... previous issue was dead motherboard, blinking power LED, no fan spin nor LED backlight, which was caused by a missing SLP_S5#. This was fixed when I replaced the RTC crystal.

Which brings us to the present. The screen started glitching every other 2 seconds. The screen corruption looks like the horizontal pixels/scan-lines are being shifted to different spots. This also happens on the BIOS setup. So I thought, "Okay, this might be my LCD since the thing has...
