    Updated: Dell embraces AMD processors

SAN JOSE, Calif. — In a major shift in strategy, Dell Computer Corp. on Thursday (May 18) said that it would roll out new servers, based on microprocessors from Advanced Micro Devices Inc.
The disclosure, revealed in Dell's first quarter results, indicated that the PC giant would introduce new servers based on AMD's Opteron line of 64-bit processors by year's end.

Ahhh, the AMD versus Intel war!! That's just like Ford versus Chevy, Republican versus Democrat, and Coke versus Pepsi............... The war will never end, and nobody ever wins!!

I like both CPU makers, both have their pluses and minuses. AMD has come a long way over the years! Back in the Pentium classic days, AMD was nothing more than a zit on Intel's ass, but today, there's excellent competition, which keeps both companies striving for new and innovative products, and keeps the prices in check. Dell made a good decision.

yes i agree that strong competition is good for the consumer. unfortunately i am still suprised about this when intel is bringing out such strong procs at the moment and perfect for the server market with lower power and heat, that it looks like they will be on top for a while until amd brings out something new.

looks like the Reg shares the same opinion
Dell takes care of Wall Street, not customers with AMD move

anyway looks like it is only 4 way servers that will have the opterons. if Dell started using amd in desktops then they could play intel against amd for better pricing. looks not to be on the cards for the moment.

actually things havent been so interesting in cpu news for a while. also from the Reg
Apple shunned superstar chip start-up for Intel
now i have been curious about these new intel proc macs. there is a software layer called rosetta which translates old power pc software to the intel procs and i understand this results in slower performance. i wasnt aware of PA Semi as a competitor to intel for the mac contract but their new proc with 7w instead of 21-25w of the core duo is mighty interesting if it goes anywhere eventually........what happened to that russian company almost ready to release a proc? anybody remember that?

My last intel CPU was a socket 370 533Mhz celeron
which oc to 850Mhz. I was quite satisfied at that time.
But it was not as good as the elder 300A which could
oc upto 450Mhz with stock fan heatsink.

Since then , I never brought an intel again.
            Upon system upgrade , I brought a Duron 800,
            Duron 1100, AXP 1500+, AXP 1700+, AXP 2500+ ,
sempron 2200+ . I feel easier to buy some cheap
cpus instead of buying an expensive one.

Really,I love to see the cpu war heat up again.
I love the good old days when you had just a m/b you
could choose a cpu from differet brands, Cyrix, IDT,
Nx ,AMD or intel. You could choose from ATI , S3,
Nvidia, Trident, Maxtrox, 3Dfx for a graphic card.

Re: Updated: Dell embraces AMD processors

The Intel Core Duo will only win in single/dualprocessor systems, not quad processor because the bus will be satuarated, just like with current Xeons...

So that is why Dell are moving to AMD for quad proc systems, because AMD can simply not be touched there by Intel, and will probably not be for quite some time... (Think 2007-2008)

With the Purchase of Alienware, Dell is already an AMD buyer...

good news that there is a technical reason behind it.
