    Ultraportables question

    I'm looking at ultraportables at the moment. Second hand units to be precise as I can't see the benefits of buying a new unit if all I do is type up reports and browse the internet.

    Anyway, what I'm looking for is something small, sleek and light.

    After some searching around on the net, I stumbled across the Toshiba Portege R200. It's a 12.1" laptop, 0.7 inches thin, 1.3GHz Centrino, Intel 915GM chipset, has 1GB of RAM, a 60GB 1.8" HDD and weighs under 1.5KGs. I've seen units go out for around $120 complete with chargers and bags. (battery life I don't care about as my university has power points EVERYWHERE)

    Now this laptop definitely suits my requirements, but I'd like to ask if anyone has any other tips with this model of laptop or recommend me a similar spec laptop from another manufacturer?

    you already have one.

    the d400 you have will kick the snot out of that toshiba... your cpu is a pentium m donthan (earlier d400s had banias units), as is what you found. whoever, yours is a faster chip iirc.

    1.8" hdds are trouble... stick with a 2.5.

    the only edge is i915 vs i855GM and ddr2 vs ddr... but for $120, IMHO, it isn't worth it.

      I used to own a Portege 4010. Or, um, two to be specific. They're really flimsy. Don't.

        I used to have a portege M300. I recon they are the best laptops ever. Toshiba Portege laptops are about the only ultraportables that can't be considered netbooks (ie. have DVD Drives). There's one here (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Toshiba-P...item1c1f553cae). working but with a missing battery clip.
        I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

        No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

          I actually gave that one to the (now) ex gf, so I can't really go and ask for it to come back LOL
          Anyway, I feel like a Toshiba this time around as I've been very satisfied with some other Toshiba products I've bought through the years

              That was on my shopping list as well but the high selling price kinda turned me off. So I bit the bullet and got myself a Toshiba R200. Gotta wait till it comes and see how it performs.

                I know you already got something, but I love(d) my Thinkpad X31 (until it fell two stories and smashed into a billion pieces, no joke)

                  I just got the R200 this morning... a very nice and sleek unit... but hinges are a tad worn and loose. I'll be buying replacements for them soon.

                  And you know what? A close friend manages to pick up the D400 off my ex the day that my R200 arrives at the door. RAGE! *rips hair out*

                  Anyway, looks like I'll be using the R200 instead with its sleekness.
