the laptop doesn't recognize any CD now. i will try it again after i assemble it.

You may have a bad drive or a defective cable [or connector] to it.

Win98 still sucks for most serious intents and purposes. Heck, it even fails at surfing the 'net nowadays.

That's true if you don't use 98Lite!

98Lite removes a bunch of stuff that makes it vulnerable to malware and basically turns Windows 98 into a portable OS with basically only the kernel and app running.

Then afterwards, Windows 98 requires one more tweak with the networking settings, because, yes, it will be slow as heck, there's an issue with the default settings that causes broadband to crawl at 2 Mbit or less!

98Lite will work like a charm on Intel 845 boards and PIII boards!

After I got all the tweaks I needed, including from MSFN, the 98Lite'ed Windows 98 SE on the MSI 845E Max with a Northwood beats even Windows 2000 in benchmarks and is faster overall.

The only time I get errors is when the Northwood temp starts getting too high when I'm Prime95'ing it.

It starts getting finicky at 2.8 Ghz and I need a lot of cold air for Prime95 to pass.
