    New notebook batteries on ebay

I'm referring to older notebooks that are no longer in production for years like D600, D810, Thinkpad R31 etc.

How can I tell a vendor that sells new batteries are reputable? I know there is very specific design and care to manufacture new Li-Ion batteries.

The price range of batteries for after-mentioned models is 30 to 50 dollars range.

    Cheers, Wizard

It's pretty much a crap shoot unless you get genuine OEM batteries. And even then, they could be batteries that have been sitting on a shelf for years, and are just as dead as the ones you already have.
    Ludicrous gibs!

If you do buy through ebay, make sure you purchase from someone that sells only batteries. And be sure that you look carefully at the seller's feedback ratings because buyers will be quick to respond with negative feedback over slow service, poor quality, low charge capacity, etc. There's one company in the States that actually rebuilds your existing battery. They cut open the case and replace the batteries with new ones (Sony I think). At least you know it will be the same OEM charging circuit within the pack along with quality batteries. Unfortunately, it's not much cheaper than the "brand x" models on ebay.

Placing higher capacity cells in a 'smart' battery pack will not guranatee that the battery pack will supply a higher capacity:

My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

NEW unopened NOS OEM battieries for your age range are a good deal. I found one for my d400 for $30... it was the high capacity version and had 99% of the original capacity.
