HELP! mobo is dieing soon! Need opinions on replacement.

I’m on a limited budget and looking for QUALITY and RELIABILITY—something that will last. I’m trying to decide which motherboard of these two to choose, and which one has the better capacitor setup. I’m not expert enough to look at the board tell if it’s 3 phase, 4 phase, or what…

Can someone give me your input please?

    The two boards are:
    • GIGABYTE GA-K8N Pro-SLI Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4
    o http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128301
    • ABIT KN8 SLI Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI
    o http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813127225

From what I can tell these boards are practically identical—the only difference in features being the number of USB and fire wire ports.

Abit appears to have the better cooling solution with the built-in heatpipe, but I’m a little wary of their phase control. If I’m not mistaken, they use fewer phases and try to compensate with heat-sinks.

If I have any clue as to what I’m looking at, Gigabyte appears to have a better phase-control setup, but the cooling solution on the mobo sucks.

    * For CPU I’m thinking AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ …. **or**…. Athlon 64 3200+ (Venice) (not sure how much money I want to spend yet).
    * For video card I was thinking of starting out with a XFX PVT43PUDS7 (Geforce 6600 256MB GDDR2). I haven’t been gaming much lately and figure * I can toss in another 6600 and run them in SLI when I get more serious.
    * For power supply: ENERMAX EG565AX-VEFMA2.0-SLI ATX12V 535W
    * I’ll use my existing 1GB of Corsair 3200 “value ram”.

I’m on barrowed time, so need input quickly please!!! The motherboard I’m using has a bulging cap next to the AGP slot and I had trouble posting a few days ago.

Input, suggestions? Mostly I’m looking for stability and reliability—hence my concern about Abit’s long-term life expectancy with their rather exotic capacitor cooling setup. It worries me. I don’t have experience with either brand.

Not looking to recap this board--the SATA controller went out a while ago, so it's not worth it.

Gigabyte looks like it has some of the Nichicon HMM series, common on them, not a long term reliable cap. The ABIT has TMZ caps on it, although some may be all Rubycon, luck of the draw, I do not know much about TMZ.

How about the slightly more expensive DFI Lanparty?

    Excellent boards

Thanks for the info on the caps.

Man, $160 is getting up there... That mobo is more than I really need too. I'm not looking for anything too exotic. Do you think I'll have to spend that kind of money to get good phase/cap setup?

Since I'm not a hard-core gamer, I'm considering going with a single PCI express mobo. Any recommendations on an AMD solution with a good cap setup that should last as while... hopefully under $120??

        Thanks...

          The DFI Ultra-D is $123.

This Abit board has Rubycon and other nice caps, but Abit can be luck of the draw.

Most new ABIT boards have quality caps. I'd recommend the AV8 Link
              The great capacitor showdown!

Dell G3 17 3779 - no display after mobo replacement
                by mrsith
                Hi guys,

I have a friend's Dell 3779 that came to me with severely shorted mobo. Did not manage to isolate the cause, most likely that was a bga shorted. Went for a replacement motherboard. Got one from China, apparently it's been tested prior to shipping. The mobo starts up normally but I am getting no display whatsoever.

Tried using external monitor, but being blind I am not sure if laptops goes as far as booting to Windows, a d without it I cannot get hdmi to work. Can't see boot menu options to make sure it boots to Windows. Went ahead and did a blind bios update,...

Unknown transformer : how to find a good replacement part ?
                by the_rem
                Hello guys,

I would like a quite old but still good 800 W ATX PSU to be repaired. The problem was an extremely heavy coil whine coming from the small secondary transfomer on the PCB.

I desoldered it hoping the references on the upper side would allow me to find a adequate replacement part. Sadly the written references drove me nowhere but to the manufacturer (I-MAG). I sent them a message like a bottle in the see asking them to send me a datasheet of the transformer. And... They responded ! I received a kind of datasheet (see attachment) but my competencies do not allow...

PS4 controller left stick potentiometer replacement issue
                by ezenia
                Hello,

Not sure if this is the correct section, but I have a PS4 controller that I am trying to fix. It developed stick drift on the left stick and the usual simpler methods did not fix the problem.

So I went on eBay and ordered some replacement potentiometers. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174967976757 is where I got them from.

I took the green potentiometers off the replacement sticks and soldered them onto the PCB. Assembled the controller and ran some tests. The drifting was somewhat fixed (not fully in center, but way better than before). However,...

i have a 2020 macbook pro 13" A2251 with 820-09149 logic board so i found an issue with chip labeled U6903 according to schem. boardview using flexBV software, so i removed it from the board and the issue im having is that the chip says "07A08FI ELC180" on top of it but when searching for a replacement chip, i can find tons of identical looking chips that also have "ELC180" printed on them but the first set of digits is never the same so im trying to find out if i need this exact chip with these same numbers as mine and if not which ones are compatible as a replacement?...

                FSP-350GLN(80) not booting mobo properly
                by tartuf
                Greetings

My old 350W FSP-350GLN(80) PSU was working fine with my current computer for few years(and previously with few other computers as well). Nothing has changed in setup but since last few months I am getting problems while trying to boot PC.

What happens, is that PSU starts and I can hear fans, both PSU, CPU, MOBO and GPU. I can also hear HDD scratching and normal starting sounds. But DVI monitor claims that there is "no signal". Moreover, neither USB mouse nor PS2 keyboard does flash leds like it should do upon boot.

I have to turn PSU switch...
