run any app off a USB drive?

Hey, guys, do you have the experience of running your daily used apps off a USB drive?
Which is I am now trying to do. But I find that only portable apps can be run like that.
while some apps like MS office are not portably available. How can I do that?

you can do MS office but it will require drive letters to be the same. i use opera@usb on it and abiword. that's about it. mostly i boot archlinux off of it.

There is a really good open source software suite that runs off USB flash drives. It had OpenOffice, Firefox, VLC, and a bunch of other goodies. I just can't remember the name. It was called "Portable"-something. Last I used it was three years ago, and the project was thriving then. I don't know if they are still around or not.

yes i have, depending on the app you try to run a non portable version might (or not) work, i have never tried runnin portable office or anything like it, but i think i have read theres a way to configure the open source office, u might want to give it a try.

other thing i have seen is (but not deeply studied) dual installations of the software (M$ office especifically) and then the user carries certain program files (includin the executables) in the pendrive, i have seen this type of practice cause certain areas of my org do not allow the use of M$ office, and so they try to hide it as much as possible, i thik you should try installing the app in your pen drive and carry around a copy of the regular installed Program Files folder to copy it, create your batch for the registry entries (maybe not that necessary)...and try.... i dont know but i think i'd try something like if needed to...

yeah with ms office, "dual" installations. that was what i meant. you have the executable main folder on the drive, but common files/shared files dumped all over the hard drive on the individual computers. voila, you have ms office, tho its not as portable as youwish.

The OP doesn't *appear* to be, but ya never can tell... the first spammer that I've ever seen that didn't post links, or other similar useless crap. The post that was right above yours (which has been removed) was obviously spam.... Some good info actually came out of the thread, so it can stay.....if the OP was a spammer, its the first time one ever did anything good for the site.

i like to make a live linux stick for apps... i use ubuntu custom remix to remaster the iso with the programs i want and then use it to make a live usb. imagine having TORCS on a live usb... fun...
