Computers in storage for five years

Is the most likely culprit to be bad capacitors?

    no
change the battery and try without the harddrive connected.

what computers anyway? - is this going to turn into a silly post about recapping everything on earth every couple of years?

As mentioned previously, change out more than likely the CR2032 battery.

Do not skimp on this battery. Name brand with a late expiration date has not led me wrong over the years.

Also what computer? Is it a IBM PC or Compat, Recent Apple Mac? Or is it an old TRS-80, C64,Atari 8 bit.

If its an old 8 bit computer more than likely the battery is not involved. (8088 IBM XT there was one for the date card/sometimes on the Main board)

If its a recent computer than the battery and standard PC Diagnostic to get it to post would go a long ways.

PC Diagnostics such as disconnect Hard Drive, reseat memory etc.

On the older 8 bit stuff its amazing what a Ultrasonic Cleaner, toothbrush, and IPA for a good cleaning will do. Still if traces are damaged that is a whole other game.

        Thanks,
        Chris
