I'm re-capping a board (first time), it's a VIA P4PB 400 Rev C2 (doing it for my sister), and I found these 3300uf 6.3V Rubycon caps on Ebay HERE, and I was wondering what the downside of getting them is (I know that there has to be a down side!); I would appreciate any info at all, I am totally a newbie at re-capping - Thanks!

Re: 3300uf 6.3V Rubycon caps on Ebay
I don't know any reason why you should not buying them but maybe they are old as I see a code T0344 and T0345 on them; it could be that 03 stand for 2003 and 44 and 45 is the week... so they have 5 years.
I'm not sure it is in this way, hope some experienced member can confirm or clarify it.
I'm writing you because I recap a P4PB 400 two months ago and I don't remember any 3300uF caps on it but 2200uF near CPU so you are going to increase the total capacity if you use bigger cap; it should be ok but once again wait feedback from other members.
You need also some 1000uF 6.3V (10V) to completely recap this board, it is not enough to change only 6 caps.
There are also 4 1000uF 16V if I remember well.
I hope you succeed because the board I recapped had a lot of problem and was unreliable.

Thanks for the advice Gianni, but I'm gonna change these seven and then see what happens. I know that I probably should be changing out all of the caps that you mentioned, but it's not my rig, and I want to do this as quick as possible; it took me three hours yesterday to de-solder the 7 bulging caps by the processor! I don't know if I fried the board in the process, but again, this is my first re-cap job, and I am a trial-by-fire kind of guy; that is to say that I don't learn my lesson until I fuck something up royally, and I always jump in way over my head into unknown waters, so this job seems right up my alley!
I am an auto mechanic by trade, computer repair is a hobby of mine. When I started fixing cars, I don't remember pulling any engines on the first day, so 7 caps is a pretty good start! I don't plan on being an expert at re-capping for at least two, maybe three months...
Thanks for the positive feedback, Gianni. Can anyone shed any more light on my misdoings?Comment

my fav. ebay shop for smaller quantities..

and of course one for having "a few" caps as spare..

closest match: http://cgi.ebay.com/100PCS-3300uF-6-...QQcmdZViewItem
but 100pcs would be a little overkill for 1 board *lol*Comment

Re: 3300uf 6.3V Rubycon caps on Ebay
I did a cap swap with him for 500 caps.
Some I got where those exact caps you linked to.
They are fine.

Well, I bought those caps on Ebay, and I finished re-capping my board today, got it all back together and it started up (I was fucking amazed!), now I'll leave it on overnight to see if it freezes up anymore... Any more 'board testing' suggestions?Comment

I like to run memtest for a few hours (and at least 5 or 6 passes) as the first check.

by momakaI know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.
For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

by eryjusHello,
First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.
I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.
I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

by Paxman_SwedeHello!
I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.
The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.
I have studied the board and...-

by momakaNormally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow.
But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though.
I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

by captain150I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...-
