Can You Help Me Correctly Identify This Capacitor

I have a Compaq Contura 25/4 laptop on my workbench at home at the moment (yes it's a 32 year old laptop) and when I tested it I saw some magic smoke come from it!

Fortunately the power board is separate to the main motherboard so hopefully this will make it easier to repair..

Here is a close up of the blown capacitor:

I'm assuming it is a 2.2µF 25V ceramic capacitor that I need to order a replacement of? Not sure if it's a 'standard' one or a tantalum one for example so looking for your expertise and experience on this one!

It goes without saying (but I'll say it any way) I will replace all the electrolytic capacitors on the board whilst I have it out of the machine.

Looks like a 2.2uF 25V tantalum capacitor, your guess is correct
Tantalum caps when they fail they go

Thanks for confirming my suspicions - much appreciated 😎

This is my blog on what I'm attempting to repair: https://www.retrocomputing.co.uk/202...q-contura.html

I've now replaced the caps and just need to test it to see if anything else is wrong with the board, but I'm hoping it's just the caps as it is 32 years old this laptop!

So pleased my repair has brought this 32 year old laptop back to life - worth attempting to repair the hinge now and if that's successful I need to replace the 120MB IDE hard disk as that's just clicking!

next time use a 35v part.
25v is too close to the charger voltage for comfort.

                Tantalum capacitor burning out
                by joetristan
                Hello,
I’m using a 10 µF, 20 V tantalum capacitor as a decoupling capacitor across a 5 V supply. When I power the circuit, the capacitor burns out.

At first, I assumed the tantalum capacitor was defective and replaced it, but the new one burned out as well when the circuit was powered.

I then replaced the tantalum capacitor with a 10 µF, 63 V electrolytic capacitor. This time, the capacitor did not fail after powering the circuit.

I do not understand why the tantalum capacitor burns up?

identify capacitor for MacBook Pro with rare logic board 820-02037-06
                by devsigner
                Hi

While messing around with my MacBook Pro, I stupidly pinged off a very small surface mounted component that I’m now trying to identify.
resistance tests show a rising resistance value, indicating a capacitor.

The laptop boots up and runs, however I'm choosing not to use it until I get it fixed.

i can’t see any markings on the capacitor at 10x magnification using a professional jewler's loop.

It seems like there's some damage to the capacitor - one side doesn't have "shiny bits" - can you tell I don't do this for a living!...

Help to identify a laptop mainboard SMD capacitor LA-9982P
                by BlackBurn
                Hello everyone,

I have an Dell Inspiron 15 3537 laptop mainboard (LA-9982P Rev. 3.0 (A02)) with a blown SMD capacitor as shown in the attached images. However, there is no printed specifications near the capacitor or a codename for the capacitor to identify the specification of the capacitor to replace it. I wonder how to identify the capacitor since the mainboard schematics are also useless as the capacitors are not named on the board. Any help would be highly appreciated.

                Thank You. Stay Safe.

Dick Smith Q-1760 linear power supply filter capacitor question
                by Agent24
I have acquired a used Dick Smith Q-1760 power supply - although the OEM is Manson Industrial
It has at least one problem.

The voltage control potentiometer VR2, 50K is faulty - going high resistance / open circuit in the CCW end and leading to the output voltage jumping around.
I have already ordered a replacement potentiometer, so that's not an issue.

Now, I want to replace all three electrolytics on the PCB as they are CapXon and I don't trust them so much, I will replace them with something better while I've got the thing apart anyway.
                All are CapXon...

If I replace with inferior capacitor, Is it No harm to other IC components at all?
                by chth96
I replaced some capacitor which is located on optical pickup pcb which is shown in the table below(PCB #2).Because it have been out of order.
Now,It works very well,But I just have found that all caps (6svpc100my and other part number as well) ,which is shown in the table below, has ultra-high ripple current spec.
It is not able to obtain any capacitor which can be a substitute for this ultra-high ripple current nichicon capacitor.
So I replaced it with samxon and rubycon's general capacitor(GP,YXA series).
I know that these capacitor will not last as long as nichicon capacitor...
