    Capacitor question

hi all, this may have been asked/answered before but I couldnt find the answer, can I replace caps with a lower farad value but a higher voltage rating? I'm not sure if it's safe or if anyone has tried already. I ran out of caps of the right size and I only have higher voltage with lower farad value caps left.

it is better than a lower farad rating and same voltage. YMMV though. what is the difference in farad rating?

try not to decrease too much because it may affect stability, capacitance on boards is usually minimal anyway.

well i have like 100uf at 25 volts or so... I wasnt going to try it because it seems a little low. How much would be safe to decrease the capacitance? these would replace 1000uf at 6.3 volts

        Re: Capacitor question

that seems far too low, i have seen on boards 470uf 16v and 330uf 25v used in places where 1000uf 6.3v would normally be used.

it depends where it is used really, on input caps and vcore i would not recommend to decrease the capacitance much, depends really if you are using one of the more powerful processors for the board design or a low power one. in the case of not having the right caps if you have a row of caps in parallel you could double the capacitance and use half the number of caps for instance, populating every other position. that would be the same result as long as the total capacitance is the same for that row.

on other positions of the board you might be luckier and able to use a lower value but 100uf is really low and best to forget it do the job properly.

cool thanks for the info. I'll have to double check the board position when I get home. They arent on the input caps or vcore caps. I replaced the vcore caps with ones I had of the same rating and the input caps were good still (panasonics). The proc is actually a mobile celeron, but I was planning on increasing the voltage on it.
