    Board Short or Cap problem?

This is my first time post, so if my question is newbie I apologize in advance. I sifted through the posts, but couldn't find quite what I was looking for.
    The Problem:
I hooked up a fan controller to my Epox 9NPA Ultra, tried to fire it up, and it didn't boot. The lights on the board were on, the fans swirled for a second, then a burnt odor was emitted, and everything stopped booting. Some of the capacitors were holding charge, because the board's lights were on. I pulled the board and looked for burnt spots on both sides of the board, but found nothing. I examined the capacitors, but the tops looked flat, and I did not see any oozing. Does this sound like a short problem or capacitor problem? I'm using a different board with the othersame hardware, and everything is fine.

My main question is how do I check the capcitors with a multimeter? Do I first need to remove the capacitors from the board to test them? Although I've built rigs before, I'm a newbie at electrical and any info on troubleshooting the board or links to testing capcitors would be greatly appreciated, because I really like this board for my purposes. Thanx in advance.

Hi, this is my personal laptop, which the original board (lets call it Board A) blew up PU8700 (TPS51486), making a hole on the board, i had left the laptop at my desk one day with the battery fully charged and didn't touch it for a week, but when i tried to turn it on it didn't
Thought the battery was dead, so i plugged in the charger then tried to power on, the power LED blinked once, charged LED still orange, unplugged the charger, plugged in again and I noticed the "magic smoke" smell, so i unplugged the charger, removed the back cover and saw the blown IC (the "magic...

    MacBook Air A2337 - 820-02016 - Stuck at 5v - Varying current draw - Board had short
    by duwane
    Hi All.

I have an 820-02016 board (A2337 M1) that has come in for data recovery. Reported as liquid damage, but no visible evidence of any liquid damage.

Board was initially stuck at 5v, and current only spiking occasionally to around 400mA and cycling.

After initial troubleshooting, found that C7800 (which feeds the power rail PP5V_BSTLQ_VOUT_SPMU) was dead short to ground.

Replaced C7800 and short gone. Board still stuck at 5v. Current draw behaviour changed. It now spikes up for a second to around 100mA to 130mA, then drops down to...

Need help pinpointing my short on this board (Lenovo) NM-D351
    by survivalbloke
This is a Lenovo Thinkpad P15s Gen 2 with a board NM-D351. I'm having trouble finding my dead short to ground. I have the area narrowed down after much probing. You'll see in the boardview, there are two coils involved. I removed those coils and verified that that short is not on the mosfet side of those coils. . You'll see an arrangement on both sides of the board of 5 caps and one smaller one to the side. I have removed ALL 12 of these small caps and still have the short. Prior to that I injected at those caps with 1v5a and the short was only drawing 800ma so I could not see anything on thermal....

A2681 MacBook Air 13" Short on board question.
    by Stephen
The board turned on before hand but it was liquid damaged, I was able to fix some of the issue with the board, but the battery wasn't charging and so we replaced a few caps and still no luck, swapped out 4 batteries to see if the batteries were bad, and they were all good batteries after final testing. I checked for voltage at PPBUS_AON and no voltage was present which was odd, so I went ahead and replaced U5200 with a new chip since this has something to do with the charging issue and power issue. Replaced but no life still, so went ahead and look for shorts and found an odd area that is shorted...

Sony KDL-40Z4500 LCD with stripes and 9 blinks (possible BGC board or harness problem
    by huj3r
    Hi there!

I have a Sony Bravia KDL-40Z4500 which shows a colored vertical stripes pattern when turning on, with a central black shadow that slowly dissipates within the first 10 seconds.

Photo of the situation after the black shadow dissipates:

After this behavior the red LED will blink 9 times, then pause for a bit, and blink again 9 times, in a loop.

I checked the manual (available here) and this corresponds to "HFR error", quoting from the manual:

    > This indicates HFR Communication error. [ HFR Communication...
