I just found an old Asus motherboard in my pile. The CPU VRM caps are all hideously bulged. Four are Nichicon HM 3300u 6.3V, date code H0133. (33rd week of 2001?) The others are Nichicon HD 1500u 6.3V, date code H0118 (18th week of 2001?) I was under the impression that only HM/HN was affected by the 2001-2004 defect, so are the HD bulging for other reasons? Some of the HM have a yellow caked-up dust covering the vent...
Also, one of the coils on the board looks like it has burnt out. The core has turned from green to white and the wire is blackened.
This motherboard will probably be thrown out as it is so old (looks to be AMD Athlon?) but I'm just curious about what happened.
I'm trying to figure out the design of this motherboard. I am wondering why there are no 16V caps. Maybe the CPU VRM is generated off the 5V or 3.3V lines?
