Please see the attached photo.
My daughter's machine has mixed poly and electrolytic caps in the VRM. All the VRM caps are bulged and/or leaking. 820uF/6.3v. There are two polymers at each end of the VRM cap string. Q: should I recap with MCZ or see if I can find more 560uF/4v polys? Last edited by bgavin; 06-10-2009 at 08:40 PM.. |

I hear everyone is recommending polys.
Which type you have on hand? Personally, I am waiting for some polys I had ordered to play with.... |

KC8 responded in another thread...
I guess the plan is to pull all ten pieces... four good OSCON 560 and six bad 820 lytics, replace all ten with 820 OSCON. |

Are these Nichicon HM/HN? If so, maybe you should pull all of them off the board if they are the ones with the bad date codes. MCZ should probably work fine as a replacement. Polys will be nicer, of course

The defective caps are all MCZ.
Obviously went over temp and burned up. This is a shitty design case and prone to over heating. I told the client to throw it out and buy a new machine. |

I am amazed at how trashed this GX270 is. Nearly all the caps are leaking or bulged, yet it still works.
The southbridge is VERY hot, as is the crappy little power supply unit. The PSU fan is working. Hot, hot, hot. No wonder all these caps popped. This design is a complete piece of shit. The only thing of value on this machine is the 3.0 P4 Northwood. |

In that case may I have the 3.0GHz P4? Would be nice for my work at our shop (currently 2.8C).

Tell that one to a client with a critical socket-478 machine that cannot be replaced with a 775 board. |

Damn. After all that farting around with my Wai Fong order, I find out I brain-farted and order 10mm polys. I hope I can find a use for 50 of the 820/4/10mm caps.
So... I did another 820/2.5/8mm bulk order from a different source. Stupid. Dump. ![]() Disassembling this board from the Dell case tray is quite annoying. The processor HSF bracket ties the board to the tray. Those old Intel 478 brackets and push-pins really suck. |

The recap was a success using 820/2.5v polymers.
The leads are indeed a bit thicker, and required more cleaning with the needle. This machine also had bad caps on the video card. This was a first for me, and I replaced four popped 1000uF/6.3 with 10v MCZ. |
